Am I remembering correctly that Boswell is in Portland?
(edit: NVM, I see that he is in Bend) |

I met Butchback in the 90s when he was the repair person at Blue Note in San Luis Obispo. He worked on my Santa Cruz.
Then he disappeared for awhile. He returned to SLO and opened up his own repair shop after working on repairing everything that came across his bench at Rudy's in Soho. He did stellar work on my guitars and mandolin before heading to Bend. When I saw him at SBAIC his guitars had hit $7,500. Now they are at $12,000. Glad I'm retired and put of that price range.

I met Butch in the lobby of the B&B in La Conner the morning of the first day of the first show - 2017 I think. He was showing a nice redwood topped koa OO to the manager, and I said "nice koa!" and off we went.
I ended up buying that one after the show and still have it. Really nice work, exceptional woods. Last I heard a bit over a year ago he was making a limited run of D18-type all mahogany. I couldn't shake the funds loose at the time but was sorely tempted. He's also made some nice solid body electrics (one that used to be on his website was solid redwood... gorgeous!). Yep - Bend, OR last I heard. If anyone gets in touch with him say hi for me! Phil

It's a joy to read words of praise about Butch's guitar building. I've known him since he first went to work for Blue Note Music, in San Luis Obispo, in the mid 90s, while attending Cal Poly.... Any guitar that he couldn't repair was ready for the scrap pile...
When he got his engineering degree, I used to tell him he ought to be building a bridge, or dam, somewhere, and give up fooling around with acoustic instruments... Lucky thing he never paid attention to my advice, because he builds guitars well as any that I've seen! Don |
