I tried hard to do some new set ups for these last pictures. I find it much harder to shoot pictures of finished guitars. It's difficult to control all of the reflections. I've learned some new tricks in the process though.

That black does look like it could just suck you in! When you actually holding the guitar you can see a little bit of grayer streaking. I didn't want to try to dye that out because I think it shows that the guitar wasn't painted black. But it's beyond a camera to pick that up.

I guess I was comparing it to guitars that just seem encrusted with abalone etc. I was hoping to keep the abalone there to add some color and to show off the shape of the guitar not obscure it.

Best body shape in a decade? That's a real compliment! I really struggled to design a parlor shape that I liked. I'm glad others like it too!

So I had the great good fortune to play this guitar yesterday at Mark's shop.....Holy Smokes!!! It is just a lovely instrument with a voice and sustain that betray its beautiful small size. Plays like a dream with really nice overtones from the eye-catching black sides and back.....indeed the wood is just stunning to look at. Cool inlays too. Just perfect.

Played this one too. Wonderful trebles that are bright and clear, with lots of sustain. The tone of the cedar top is warm and balanced. As good as it gets with a nylon crossover.....

That is a really beautiful parlor guitar! I also really like the headstock design--I have sketched something very similar before as an idea for a fanfret slotted headstock--it was funny to me when I saw yours because it was the same basic idea as I had, even though yours is not for a fanfret.

It was great having you out again. I enjoyed our conversation and it's always nice to hear someone play my new guitars. I gives me a chance to stand away and really hear them, plus there's the added benefit of hearing a very good musician!

I have to say my wife, Karen likes it a lot too. After I can spend time in deep guitar conversation with visitors my loving and ever patient wife gets a break!

I'm very proud of how this guitar came out. New model, new headstock, and a new direction for inlay work for me, it's wonderful to get the ideas that stir around in my head turned into actual guitars and to get these types of complements is icing on the cake!

I was thinking this would make a good fan fret headstock also. Originally, I designed it so the tuners would be offset. This way I could take off some of the width of the headstock without the tuners hitting each other.
I am very happy with how it's turned out. I've had several customers already request it on upcoming builds.

Here are some pictures of the second BRW small jumbo of the three I have been working on. I'll be shipping this one next week and may be able to get sound clips done beforehand.

This has a Swiss Spruce top and is a 25.5 scale:





















When I was doing the final set up and taking these pictures of the guitar it occurred to me that this guitar has a very masculine presence to it. I never picked that up from my other guitars. It struck me that if this was the first Josie small jumbo model I made the model name may have been Joseph!

The three BRW small jumbos have developed along their own paths.
There are so many decisions to make when building that a theme seems to start and grow through out each build. I try to be open to that with each individual guitar. Although I work on a number of guitars at a time they are always kept in very different stages in the process. That may not be the most efficient way to build multiples but, it helps keep them as individuals. Plus, it doesn't descend into tedious repetition as it would if I were to do say multiple neck carving or fretting in batches. Hope that makes sense!
