May 1, 2019 photo of me at sunrise getting ready to capture audio and video of "setting day", the day when the local lobster fishing season opens in my community.

Setting day is always an exciting spectacle. The boats and gear are readied the night before and they all leave the wharf at precisely 6:00AM. It is a mad scramble for everyone to head out of the harbour and get to their favourite spot to set the traps. It is a high stake race, but the locals support each other and remain civil.

The photo was taken by a local shooter and shows me anticipating the start with a camera ready to take some handheld shots. Just to the right of me is my Sennheiser MS rig (MKH30/40 in Rycote) to capture audio (the roar of ~20 boats revved up awaiting the start is exhilarating), with more video gear out of frame.

After the shoot we await the next day when the traps are checked and the first catch of the season comes to shore. A ritual that repeats year after year in our small community of ~250.

The day before...

Thanks! Looking at the EXIF data for some reason I shot this at f4, so probably could have been sharper. Had more than enough light to stop down a bit.

I love it! In my area of NS it's called "Dumping Day".

Hi Dru.

Yes, we went 3 years ago. It was a great trip even though a pickpocket stole my iPhone on day 2.

Different angle.
