I was a kid when they first started...reminded me of a modern-day Marx Brothers...great body of songs, too, from a lot of great writers... I always felt like Peter was viewed as the Ringo of the group, but he was the most versatile and musically talented one of the bunch...Janis Ian posted a nice tribute on FB, recalling how helpful he was getting her started...always came across as a nice, humanitarian kinda guy...sorry he's gone...

Yes, very sad. Another piece of my childhood gone. Peter was a fine musician and kept performing. Loved his little Guild. RIP monkee man.

Enjoyed their songs and tv show, too. My friends were concerned at first that it was a group created just for the show - kind of fake, they didn’t play the instruments, etc. - but we were quickly won over and became big fans.
Here’s a great interview from Rolling Stone: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/m...-1960s-797309/

Farewell, Peter.
Yes, the group was put together by Kirshner, but they became their own entity. They showcased some very good songwriters—such as the late John Stewart (“Daydream Believer”).

And Davy Jones was a Tony-nominated singer.

A coupla bits of Monkees/Beatles trivia:
Davy Jones was one of the performers who appeared on the Feb. 9 1964 episode of the "Ed Sullivan Show". Peter Tork played banjo on George Harrison's Wonderwall.
