How do you check the neck angle on an archtop guitar?

MODS: Can you please move this to the general Acoustic section. I also want to know and am sure someone over there will respond. Thanks.

The OP double posted it in the build and repair forum same day he posted it here, and got some answers there. You get a protractor and use the side of the guitar beside the neck joint as the reference angle, and measure the relative angle of the bottom of the fretboard to see what the neck angle is. On an archtop, it will be in the range of 3.5 degrees to 5.5 degrees, depending on things like height of arch in the top, floating or fixed fretboard extension, desired bridge height.

The proper neck angle is dependent on the arch of the top and the height of the extension off the top. Typically you like to see about an inch of clearance from the top in the bridge area to a straightedge held along the fret plane.

Basically if the bridge is all the way down and the action is too high the angle is not so hot.
