What Are The Benefits of An Archtop Guitar?

Thanks for your input! I grew up listening to jazz guitar, Herb Ellis is a favorite, and always loved the sound of hollowbody electrics. Now I have a better understanding of the history.

My curiousity got me to try a 1945 Gibson at my local guitar shop. It needed new strings, but to my ears, it still had an attractive tone. It did lack bottom end, but it was loud and had more sustain than I expected.

I've noticed some modern guitars that borrow features seen on archtops, Mcpherson, I think, is one. The advent of the electric may have obviated further 'crossbreeding'. It would be interesting to hear a luthier's comments on that.
