Default [NGD Review - final update!] Tom Sands S – Redwood / Oregon Myrtle build thread

A Tom Sands 12 fret Model S (weeeeee).

Using woods from the California and Oregon Pacific coasts (where I'm from), to create a responsive fingerpicking powerhouse.

Top is a set of Craig Carter "Fine Arts" redwood (https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/...8&postcount=19).

Back and sides are figured Oregon Myrtle (Bay Laurel).

Aesthetic will be minimalistic to let the woods shine, but there may be some secret treats to tie it all home.

Lovely stuff. Tom makes a fine guitar and there is nothing inconsidered so excited to see the little touches that set this so off.

Wow! That redwood top is insane quality. Definitely in for a treat with Tom Sands guitars. Tom has a great eye for unique looking instruments. Can't wait to see how it sounds!

A winning combination - great builder, woods you can relate to and still get the sound you want, and they look fabulous!

Congratulations on your build.

What Jamie said!!! Unbelievable silking in that top, and the back reminds me of flamed maple.

Should be a BEAUTIFUL axe

Cheers

Paul

Thanks all! The rim assembly is finished, and the box should be closed up in the next couple of weeks.

We're leaning towards Ziricote for the fretboard - any other suggestions to check out?

Congrats - Tom makes some of the very best guitars I have ever played.
Those sides look THICK!
We all know there's a vogue for that (traceable back to Greg Smallman and his 18mm birch ply) but it's approached differently - I've even seen MDF used! Do you know what Tom has got going on in there? I'm guessing it would be super-heavy if laminated wood alone?

Tom used Rocklite on my Sands to great effect. I don't like a lot of figure on the fretboard so Ziricote would not be my choice, but YMMV. You might want to check out Fenland Oak - it's hard and beautiful...and 5K years old.

Cheers,
Steve
