Urk...

I usually try and stay away from resurrected posts but this one got right past me.

So, to sum up 4 pages:

...it depends on the individual guitar.

Question answered!

Walk into GC yesterday to buy a solid guitar w/c for 1199.99 and instead walked out with a Yamaha A1R for 700.00.. It sounds, looks, and is alot easier to play then the original guitar I was after.

Cool Solid wood vs. Laminate?

Every guitar is different, and the construction is important, so every guitar must be evaluated on it's own merits. I have several all solid wood guitars, with different soundboard bracing and thickness, some with solid tops & laminate b/s. The strings you use will make a huge difference in how each guitar sounds. And sound is subjective to every player. Play and compare as much as possible, until you recognize the sound you prefer. The rest doesn't much matter.

I was going to leave this alone... but had to say...

Many companies are today producing outstanding laminates ( or laminates by another name) in many cases using process or materials that do not even come close to being anything like the production laminates of 10 years ago and before.

Many of us say you gotta play it and trust your ears, but more and more you gotta suppress your bias over materials that differ from traditional solid wood because if you don't you may miss a gem out there. They often are different but not always is that different 'bad'.

I have a PRS Angelus Custom with solid back and top but laminated sides that sounds like Angels singing.
Before that I had a Epiphone Dove Pro with solid top and laminated back and sides and it sounded great for the money.
I was also looking to buy an all laminate Ibanez EW series as I think they look and sound great.
Its also important to realize that on a cheaper laminate guitar you can upgrade the plastic nut and saddle to bone or or tusq, change the strings and that would make a great improvement for very little extra money.
