Default Decent Starter Ukelele for My Wife

Hey guys,

My wife has always had a hankering to play the Ukelele and I want to buy her a decent Uke. Keep in mind she might try it and give it up after 2 weeks, so I don't want to pay a lot for the first one. However, I also don't want to buy a toy that sounds like crap and makes her want to quit....

Any recommendations for a decent starter model?

Thanks!!!

Steve

I bought my daughter a nice Ibanez starter Uke at GC. Reasonably good wood, sealed tuners. Good sound and feel.

My wife got me a Luna 'Tatoo' a/e uke, quite good as a starter instrument. get it without the plug-in electrics and save a few bucks. The Lanakais are good starters, too.

I would suggest three different brands you could try. Kala is probably first only because they are prolific, many stores carry them. Spend over a hundred to get a little better quality and still not break the bank.

If you see any Ohana ukes, that's another good brand though harder to find in stores.

Also, look online and gander at "Mainland" ukes out of Indiana (you'll have to order one of these). They set these up real nice, good value for the money.

Also, size makes a difference. I would suggest starting out with a Concert or Tenor uke as a first uke. Sopranos can be a little small. However, you'll get other opinions on that last remark for sure.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Also, I got an email from Hawaii Music Supply this morning indicating that they're having a Labor Day sale!

I bought one of the makala ukes as a first and it is sweet. I think I paid $79.
