Almost every LA-2A clone I looked at is doing that, although most are doing it in a 2U version. I guess they don't want to leave any doubt as to what they're trying to do with those pieces.

This is a pretty new product but I've heard very good things about other builds by Audio-Scape and the few people I could find online who own one of these have raved about it. If this thing sounds as good as I hope it will, I'll be looking to pick up a second very soon.

Interesting I have no clue what is out there as I have never looked into an LA
My first thought it that it might be a trademark infringement but maybe that is the UA logo and the name badge is not protected .
In recording gear in the last 5 years or so it seems there has been a surge in pretty good, value priced, hardware hitting the market., mics and processors.

I was fortunate enough to have gotten in on a initial dealers cost discount for a their first order from IGS on a Tubecore 3U Mastering Edition compressor. It is a tube Vari Mu type. I have only tried tracking with it one time but mixing with it on the 2 Bus is pretty satisfying.
It has a look that I suppose is vaguely reminiscent of the Fairchild type compressor

Yeah, I think it started with microphones a little before that but you're right in that it has really taken off. At first I think the various boutique makers were a little coy about admitting what they were copying but more recently they've hidden it a lot less. I'd bet it improves sales to have a unit looking like the unit it's emulating. If nothing else, it at least gives the buyer a clear expectation about the unit. And for those people who are trying to earn a living do this stuff, I'd think their clients would be impressed by the look of the copycats.

I've never heard of that one before but it's a good looking bit of kit. My first thought was it has a kind of Shadow Hills aesthetic going on but you look at it and you know you're getting some kind of Fairchild sound. I looked it up, it's certainly not a cheap unit at $1400 per channel.

Sweet thread! My current setup:
- Aston Origin LDC
- Matched pair of Geffel M295
- Apogee Duet into iPad (Auria)

Next for me would be:
- 2 GIK gobos to tighten up room sound
- 2 channels of Hardy M1

Further down the line:
- Quality two channel ad/da
- Tube LDC (Chandler REDD is the dream)

Yes you are right the IGS does look more like Shadow Hills I couldn't remember the name .

When they first came out a couple of years ago they were quite a bit less expensive buy about 30 % or so but they got snapped up and back ordered fast and have definitely climbed in price, but seemed to have topped out at about $3195 .

I have those same Gefells. They're very nice mics, especially for my situation which requires I get the mics close to lessen my small room issues. I also have some GIK gobos and the Hardy M1 pre. If you're looking for clean, that's about as clean as it gets while still sounding sweet.

A friend of mine demoed the Chandler REDD and did a video review that might interest you...

The Shadow Hills stuff is pretty cool looking, imo.

I thought I saw a cheaper price but you're right. That's more money than I'd care to gamble on a unit I hadn't heard in person and doesn't have a wide reputation. I don't feel like I'm taking a huge risk with this clone. If it doesn't work for me, I'm sure I can recoup most of my money, and if it does work out I'll have two channels of LA2A type compression for about 60% of the cost of one UA unit.

That’s awesome, Jim. It sounds like you are living my realistic studio dream : )

I’d seen that demo on YouTube before, very nicely done!

I've been collecting all the toys I want to play with in retirement.

Vin is an absolute gear-head. My personal Flea 47 appears in at least one of his shoot-outs, and I think he's going to use it in a second that I suggested where he'll do a Flea 47 vs Flea 49 video.

Meanwhile, my Audio-Scape LA-2A clone is racked and patched. I'll be making an evaluation of it this week to see if it's a viable alternative to a real LA-2A. If I like it, I'll probably order another so I have two channels.

Do you have any issues with that Apollo only having the 4 XLRs in?

I never use them. I have all 8 TRS line inputs accessible through my patchbay. 1-4 allow me to use UAD's unison plugins but I mostly will use 5-8 with one of my standalone preamps.

Awesome. That’s really what I wanted to know. I’m upgrading soon and am trying to figure out what Apollo 8 to go with.

Life's too short for realistic - I want to hear everyone's unrealistic dreams

Sorry - feeling really loose tonight after a couple weeks of non-stop projects.

Nabbed an Apollo Duo (the thunderbolt one) a couple of days ago on Ebay with a nice plugin bundle. I figure I'll do the same thing and route things through my patchbay as I weed out pres that no longer cut it and upgrade. Rockabilly69 turned me on to the UK Sound 1173 the other day, and I may have to have one. Or two.

Time to go buy a few TRS patch cables....

I've been getting my cables through redco.com. Customized and very reasonable prices.
