That being said, my studio Mac (also a 2010 Mac mini) is still at 10.6.8 and will likely stay there until I absolutely need to update it (though it's nice to know that at least that upgrade won't cost me anything). I can see a date in the not-too-distant future, however, when I will have to...I thought I would have to last week when I picked up a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8, which is listed as requiring 10.7 or higher, but as it turns out it's just the accompanying software that needs it, the hardware, driver and mixer run just fine on 6.8. Which is what makes for the rantiness...there's a mindset in the software/hardware industry that works against just "keeping what works." E.g., I want to add another couple of channels, but because the industry considers my rig "obsolete," none of the nifty new USB/Firewire preamps will work with my versions of anything at all, and aren't backwards-compatible. Which, as ljguitar pointed out, doesn't stop me from getting a regular ol' preamp and using a couple of my line-level inputs. But the overarching latest-n'-greatest mindset means that it eventually becomes much more difficult to do a simple thing than perhaps it should be. That said, it's never been easier to get into home recording - Focusrite, Apogee, and others have some good entry-level packages at great price points. So don't get me wrong, my rantiness is tempered by the recognition that it's still a great time for us home studio types. But with today's hardware being so fast and powerful - and year-to-year improvements are far more incremental than they were 10 years ago - the only reason for breaking backwards compatibility is because of software, and that's a decision that someone, somewhere, made deliberately. |

I upgraded to Mavericks when the update came out and I'm really happy with it.
I really liked the interface that I was using prior (Sound Devices USBPre ... the original, not the 2) which wasn't supported for a while (I want to do 10.5). It got to the point where Chrome was saying that it wouldn't support that operating system anymore either so I had to come up with something pretty cheap. Ended up getting a Presonus AudioBox 22VSL. Just doing songwriting demos lately so no big deal. I'm getting used to the Presonus but it was a bummer to think that I had to get new hardware so that I can upgrade to a new OS. Just recorded something this evening to put it through its paces (here's the link ... no effects, just dry mix + a fade out ... played the wrong section so stopped the recorded there).

After reading this thread, I am very glad I'm using PC's in my studio. My main computer is ancient by today's standards but allows me to mix and match interfaces to my heart's content - 26 inputs & 32 outputs worth. All of which are available at the same time if needed.

An update!
OK, I heard back from some Mark Of The Unicorn people (the makers of my MOTU 828mkII interface).
Their input:
So! I still don't know exactly what I'm going to do, but it turns out that I've got a ton of options, and my "minor rant" is now even less than minor. It is tiny. A minuscule complaint written in a state of frustration and ignorance. Now everything digital is awesome again and computers are our rightful lords and masters. Especially Apple. All hail The Great Fruity Machine. Last edited by iWood; 02-18-2014 at 02:00 PM. |
