some other floorings to consider which are rated for basements are laminates like Pergo etc, Engineered hardwoods which are like a plywood underside with thin solid wood vaneer on top and most bamboo flooring is rated for basement. all come in a click type floating( no glue or nailing) configuration.

Here is a pic of my old basement studio with bamboo

here is a little lighter daytime shot of the bamboo

The main thing to worry about on a basement floor is moisture in the form of leaks/floods and also water vapor. Whatever choice you make in flooring make sure the manufacturer has approved it for applications over concrete slabs.

Quite true thus the three I suggested. It's also a good idea to get one of the concrete sealing paints and do all the wall lines and any cracks. And for the click type flooring is to put down a layer of heavy 6 mil visqueen.

Thanks guys, some good ideas to think about. Water in the basement use to be a problem till I filled the holes in the foundation where those metal pieces go through with hydraulic cement.

I'm wondering if as a safeguard I might call one of those basement companies to see about water proofing. When it use to flood the first 2 years I was in the house, basement technology came out and suggested a sump pump in the corner but I did not feel like spending $1200 at the time.

We've had some insane rain in the past few years at times and it hasn't flooded. I'm on the highest section of my town as well. Just don't know whether it's worth it to have a basement company put in a sump pump in a well in the corner. Would that take care of the whole entire basement? I am not quite sure how that works.

If you haven't had any water in the basement for several years then you are probably alright. There are certain precautions you can take as part of the renovation to protect the new work w/out getting too invasive, but a sump pump is a good line of defense in the event of an unprecedented storm event.
