I saw Dire Straits at the Armadillo World Headquarters just before their third album was released. He was the best I'd ever seen at singing and playing lead at the same time, and he seemed to do it effortlessly. I've got all the Dire Straits albums on vinyl, I've been a fan for a while.

Mark Knopfler was one of my biggest influences when I first started learning electric guitar.

This thread prompted me to watch Mark again -- patiently explaining that it's really just the same three chords.

I could listen to Water of Love every day. The other thing about him are the impeccable recordings he makes. If you're fortunate to have a high end stereo system, all of his recordings just shine. Don't miss Privateering if you haven't heard that album.

A huge plus 1 on this album & song too, I've probably listened to this more than anything, it is everything I appreciate in music.

I just listened to this album for the first time (can I admit that I never listened to Dire Straits or Mark Knopfler - except for the few songs that got radio play - without being severely ostracized?). I will say that I really like this album and will be spending more time with it and their other music. First listen my favorite song is “It Never Rains”.

Saw “The Princess Bride” on a lark in a posh theater when it first came out in 1987. Loved the theme and soundtrack and surprised to see Mark Knopfler as I watched the credits.

I was walking through Best Buy in 1996 and noticed some awesome music waaaay overhead and somehow found out it was from his new (then) CD. Golden Heart... went on to pick up pretty much everything he did.

There really is no equal to Mark Knopfler. I mention his name and people ask who his is. Then mention Dire Straits and the light bulb goes on.

His biggest mentor was Chet Atkins. He even got to play with Chet. They recorded Neck & Neck together and toured.

He is in a class all his own.
