Closest thing to that I've seen was a 1960s C-1s, a small student classical that was rebraced for steel strings. Sounded pretty good, too.

Turn of the century (19th-20th) Martin was adapting the European designs to his own shapes and strutting methodology.
Gibson was far more revolutionary - working to create the mandolin (mainly) and secondly the guitar in the image of the violin family. I'm fairly sure that they experimented with slotted headstocks ... but not much.
