New Schoenberg Builder
C'est moi!
As many of you know, guitarist and vintage dealer Eric Schoenberg is credited with bringing back Martin's OM in the 1980's after it had been out of production for 50 years. After working with the C.F. Martin company on that project, he went on to produce his own vintage Martin-inspired Schoenberg guitars. Schoenbergs have been built by an illustrious line of vintage experts, including Dana Bourgeois, TJ Thompson, Julius Borges, and Bruce Sexauer. I am pleased and proud to announce that I am the latest in the line of guitar makers to build guitars for Eric under the Schoenberg label. This is both an honor and a challenge for me. My first Schoenberg is a "Standard," which is the 12-fret body with long scale neck. This one is a 000 with a cutaway. The top is Adirondack red spruce; the back and sides are curly Honduras mahogany. The trim features my custom made marquetry purflings in the style of early 20th Century Martins. Here are the results: These guitars are a collaboration between Eric and the builder. He is very clear about wanting many of the details to be strictly vintage: Body shape (other than the cutaway) neck shape, headstock, and bridge follow the 1920's-30's Martin patterns. And the tonal goal is 1930's vintage Martin. But various trim details are left up to the builder, as well as some of the unseen structural matters. It is very educational for a builder to do replica work. One may think that one knows the vintage instruments from playing and repairing them. But recreating the most successful designs of the past in detail reveals new things about just why they were so successful, and the decades of refinement that went into them. I had many "aha!" moments. I understand why all those who have worked with Eric say it made them better builders.

Absolutely gorgeous. The one Schoenberg I played, I had a very hard time putting it down. Next time I hit Schoenberg's, I'll look for this...if it's still available! Thanks for sharing!

Outstanding work, Howard. We all owe Eric and Dana a big thank you for getting the OM back into our lives!
Your guitar is absolutely lovely, the burst rocks and we adore the marquetry. Be proud!

That's a real beauty. I especially like the way the backstrip came out with the figured back wood under finish. Really beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

Congratulations, Howard! Only upper echelon Masters are worthy to be members of the Schoenberg select. That's exactly why Eric is working with you. You are ALL THAT.
Your Schoenberg #1 is a beauty! I can hear that gorgeous, lush vintage tone in my mind's ear, looking at the photos. I hope you are also going to be continuing with your inimitable Howard Klepper guitars as well...?

My first Thanksgiving in the US, as a newly-arrived Brit, in 1984, was spent in the company of a man named Ed, who has since become one of my dearest friends, and was the best man at my wedding.
That first Thanksgiving was also graced by the presence of Eric Schoenberg, who Ed has known for a long time. Ed had alerted me to the fact that Eric was going to be there, and I brought along my newly-acquired Martin 0-16NY. Eric actually played it, and made kind remarks about it - I was somewhat in awe. A year or so later, Ed called me to tell me that Eric was recovering from appendicitis, and would I like to come along for a visit. That was how I found myself in Eric's basement (somewhere in Massachusetts), being handed one of the first Soloists (Bourgeois, I assume) to play. It was a transcendent experience - to this day, I recall the impression that guitar made on me. Your rendition is exquisite, Howard - congratulations!
