I like Doolins. Mike's only made one dread so far (Adi/Brazlian). I've played it, and it sounds great:

Used Collings or a SCGC Pre-War dread for that price range.

If you're willing to spend that kind of $$$, then you're probably willing to drive a little. I would go down to Twin Rivers Music in Columbus and test drive a Goodall.
If you want a dread, call to see if they have A Goodall Standard, Traditional Dread, or Longneck Dread.  I played a Standard with a redwood top that was out of this world. No offense to Martin, or even Taylor, but I haven't played or heard a better sounding guitar than a Goodall (personal opinion). If you can get your hands on a 2003 710 ltd or 2002 810 ltd with cocobolo, you won't be disapointed either. Let us know how it turns out.

I think that the limiting factor here is the $3000 limit. New Goodalls (at least from what I have seen) are about 25% more than that starting out, except for the "Aloha" series, with which I have no experience.

You might find a "pre-owned" or "pre-played" Goodall.
I know Guitar Works in Evanston have a couple of Goodall CJs that are used. Jeff is right, 3k might be the base line. I personally could not justify the cost right now, but in 5 years I might. If you're an advanced player (comfortable with playing leads and fingerpicking) then you must try one if you have the chance. The one Collings Dread I played I really liked. Very Martinesque in its tone. Other than Goodall, I really like Huss and Dalton. This Huss and Dalton CM is a great sounding guitar with " the volume of a dread" (according to thier website)  I played this one and really liked it. Ok Ok, there hasn't been a dread I've never liked  Being in Toledo, you ought to trek up to Elderly Music in MI, but then again you probably already knew that Forgive my zealousness. I'm an evangelist at heart, but hopefully not the pushy kind. Have fun in your search.

If it were me, I'd go look at a Huss & Dalton or Breedlove. Don't know if I could get what I want at that price, though.

i would be biased to say, but id buy a 714ce haha but if this was strictly between the two choices that you mentioned, id choose the 914  hahasorry

I think if you're leaning towards a D42, get a Collings. The D2h is many times the guitar, in the same rose/sitka category. And they are pretty easy to find with a 1 3/4 nut. If it was me, I'd look for a used D1A. Mog/Andr, light and airy ...like a cruse missile.

Well that was exactly my budget and I just bought a Collings D2-H.
The only other guitar i tried that came close was a Goodall Traditional dreadnought. Both really fine dreads. Different sounding guitars, yet it was hard to pick between the two. The Goodall was quite a bit more money though. Good luck, enjoy the hunt! JG
