i just saw this thread and after reading thru i wondered if it was a rotary cabinet as i have a very old leslie cabinet model 110 that is very heavy. it only has the lower speaker tho and not the upper horn. i just purchased, directly from a 1965 hammond L112 organ, the amplifier, preamplifier, reverb tank and the two heppner speakers. i plan to turn it into a guitar amp that will go thru the leslie cabinet.

guess, i'd better get started.

congrats bob! have a ton of fun with that one!!

I've got goals of things to try and so forth before I start assembling the text. I don't typically like to crank out a review during the "honeymoon phase" because things can change so much after that. But I'm glad to give initial impressions now if anyone is interested.

What do you mean "if"? Engraved invitation on the way.

Well, the tropical storm has knocked out our power so I'm typing on the cell phone. I'll put up more when the power comes back.

Meanwhile, nothing stops the morning joe!

Alrighty then. Power back on. The wind is still howling and the rain coming down so I'm not sure how long we'll have it.

This speaker is quite a step up from the single rotor experience - it is the real Leslie experience. Probably besides the fact that it has two rotors, another contributing factor is the fact that the rotors rotate in opposite directions. The clean sound is outstanding. The preamp tube contributes to a nice, glassy sound without any of the reediness or shrillness of pure solid state. On first blush, the overdrive channel is pretty bratty and splatty if run more than a tiny bit driven. Typical 12ax7 distortion through a high quality amp. I'll probably be using external O.D. I've tried the modeler through the box and it sounds lovely as well.

So, good impressions at the start.

Bob

Let's hope you keep the power and stay dry.

Sounds like a lot of fun. Congratulations!

Yeah, before supper I was just fiddling around with the Tele and using my modeler as the front end grind plugged into the clean channel and absolutely NAILED Joe Walsh's sound from the "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" portion of "The Bomber/Closet Queen." Growly and swirly and lovely. Yum!

Acoustic guitar sounds great through it, too.

Bob

You know, after a few more hours with the box I may take back a little of what I said about the overdrive channel. You can pushed it up gently into overdrive and it sounds quite nice. When you go beyond that, to real grind, that's when the 12ax7 becomes a little strident.

what about a 12at7 or 12au7? those are used a lot in reverb and tremolo tube circuits.

I'll probably try a 12ay7 like the Tweed Deluxe 5E3 uses.
