There are some amazing NUDs (new uke day) threads over on the "Other Stringed Instruments" sub forum. All solid wood ukes that look amazing.

I'm glad it had a surge in popularity. It's a darn fun little thing, and I'm so glad to have a couple around the house to enjoy when I want a change of pace from my guitars.

ukes
I see still-rising popularity. Remember they were a big thing in the '30;'s, along with raccoon coats and pocket flasks. These things come and go; its coming now.
Many people like them because they sound fun and are easy to play, as well as feel less intimidating than something bigger, with more strings (spell that g-u-i-t-a-r). And the difficulty of getting really good music on it or playing slow melodic stuff, and the lack of bass will eventually cause a wane. But until then, a lot of folks are having a blast and many are playing an instrument who otherwise might not. More power to them. I don't much care for uke music, except in certain genres, but am glad to see that they are getting a deserved revival. (Don't tell my uke friends I said that!)

Can't see them really catching on. I mean, can you imagine the birds going weak-kneed over a guy dicking around with a uke!

I dug out my tenor uke...tuned roughly by ear...and had this jammin in about 2 minutes. Very fun. And WAY easier than on guitar.

That's the beauty of the uke.

I don't know if the uke is getting more popular, but I've been wanting one for a few years now...since I realized you can use guitar chords on it!

just chiming in since we went guitar hunting the other day and nearly came back with a uke.
my youngest (who wasn't getting a guitar and was possibly just looking for something affordable that i might actually buy) picked up a uke and has been pining for one since. says it will be his "serious" instrument. after reading all the posts about how much fun they are, i'm ready to ad one to our collection. don't know if that makes us trendy - playing in general is new to us and we're having fun figuring it out. |

You can suss out the melody pretty quickly on the first two or three frets of the first two strings, too. It's like I'm Axl Rose!

A very small music store opened a year ago in my very small town of 4,000 on the Eastern Shore of MD. In that time he has sold over 60 ukelele's and has a ukelele joint lesson and concerts. Pretty amazing.

I bought my daughter one about a year ago and sort of got the bug. I just picked up a Collings for myself. Awesome sounding and playing instrument!

They must be. I bought one two weeks ago.
I am a guitar player. But tell you what... there are times you get into a funk and are tired of the same sound, chords, and grind.... there are times you get stale. Someone told me to get a uke... play it for a while... it refreshes you and helps you come back to your J45 refreshed with ideas for new sounds/chords/combinations. I get that.

I teach ukulele to my class of 8 and 9 year olds - they love it. As has been said already, the uke is increasingly replacing the recorder as the instrument of choice when starting to teach children music and this is very much the case here in Scotland.
