Default Tone Dexter - Orchestral Bass

Hi all

Has anyone used a ToneDexter with an upright acoustic bass?

I'm not looking for guessers - I already have that part covered.

I'm looking for anyone who has actually attempted this and used it live.

No direct experience but this channel does quite a few posts about the Tonedexter on different instruments. They have a cello for example. I would think it would sound amazing.

It was listening to the sound samples of the Tonedexter with these other instruments that convinced me of the validity of the tech - sometimes, I think we are too used to the tone of pickups in guitars, and don’t really understand how an acoustic guitar should sound, when amplified.

Well, I'm not sure about ORCHESTRAL bass, but we have quite a few upright bassists using ToneDexter in jazz, pop, and county situations.

A few years ago, we went down to work with Chris Stapleton's crew and among other things, I trained up Jarrod Travis' bass. He was instantly impressed and has been using TD ever since. He started a thread on talkbass.com which has gotten a lot of the bass community's attention.

Cary Black is another user who comes to mind. There's quite a few, actually.

Hi James

The term Orchestral Bass is the same in my mind as Upright Bass or Acoustic Bass or String Bass. I was just trying to differentiate between electric and acoustic.

Thanks for the response, and I was hoping you'd wade in on the question.

What type of pickups are best? My gigging partner has an upright with some sort of sensor either under the leg of the bridge or in the hole of the bridge. I'll find out.

Hi Larry, I hadn't heard that term used that way before. Now I know.

Our website has bass pickup guidance for a lot of models. Short answer is the type that wedge into the bridge wing work consistently very well. Other types can as well.

Holy! I just read through 40 pages of bass players talking about their basses, strings, pickups, preamps, amps, and microphones - thats an hour I won’t get back - and the main take-away, after James facilitated a couple requested and very bass specific updates, is that the TD does a tremendous job, especially if you just follow James simple recommendations - and that bass players like to seriously overthink things sometimes -

Sure glad I'm a guitarist then, where we approach things rationally and clear-headed at all times!

Agreed!!

But when I see posts about someone waiting 2 years for a set of hand-made strings for their guitar, (no mention of the price!), then I’ll know I’m in the wrong place!
