Such quilting.
It's like the Tree's sister.

What voice are you expecting from this build?

Thanks palolowarrior! This is guitar is being built for a client that has several guitars already and is looking for a complimentary maple guitar. So this is the ideal where I am making the guitar without any real compensation since it is supposed to sound like what it is. We're expecting the quick fundamentals and strong bass that a maple guitar does best!

Default New Saw Day

New saw day! Today I took delivery of a much larger band saw for my shop.
This will be set up for resawing and general straight cuts.
You can see from this photo why a shop should have a garage door!

687lbs of saw just doesn't go through a regular door

Looks like it might even be tricky through the garage door!

Congrats Mark!

Nice Mark. And it looks like you got those bad T-storms too.

Thanks Cigarfan! It cleared the door OK but, it was close.

It was mostly a sunny day except right when the delivery truck came until I just about got the saw in the shop. Fortunately, the saw had a plastic cover.

I got it all set up today, ran the electric, attached the dust collector, moved lights, assembly, settings, and even a couple test cuts. It's a Gruzzly 21" hp saw. Now I have my smaller band saw for curves and detail and the large one for straights. It's also big enough to handle my resawing needs which opens up a lot of opportunity for me! Gotta love a new toy!

Default Neck Work

Back to the quilted Maple Greta. This guitar has a 25" scale length and the neck is joining the body at the 13th fret. The neck wood is hard Maple. It is also a left handed guitar. I've joined up the neck halves and am in the process of binding the Macassar Ebony fret board;

Thanks for viewing!
Mark

Sweet looking fretboard, as is the one you're using to clamp it up with!

Ha! I think someone would need to be asleep at the proverbial wheel to not be on to your stratagem Mark That said, it works...it draws ALL of us in. So, if I were you, I'd stay the course.

Let me quick to add that I think your builds reflect more natural creativity than I have seen with most builders...and your photography skills rank right up there at the top of the "builder class", rivaling some professional photographers. Nice work! I'm certain this will be another stunner!

Thanks Nemoman. I've been stocking up on Macassar Ebony because it's a versatile wood and a great rosewood substitute so it is only natural that I'd have aboard handy for the job at hand.

I am in the final stages of getting everything together before I carve the neck.
The fret board gets glued on;

The maple burl back strap and purfling is glued up;

The headstock overlay design is finalized and the glue is drying right now;

A little spark of celebration is inlayed into the heel cap of this almost all maple guitar;

I've got a couple more steps and expect to carve the neck on Thursday. We're closing in!

You can't just show a picture of the thing crated outside and not follow up with a picture of it installed....

Hey Chris,

Yeah, you're right. Installation took a bit longer than anticipated. The saw runs on 240v which I had available but, then the issues began. Seems the circuit board that I have in my shop is from a company that went out of business a while ago. Apparently, they had circuit breaker issues that stuck and caused a lot of fires. They weren't real forth coming with the data. They were burning down about 2,000 houses a year. Sooo I had other things to worry about for awhile.

Yesterday I got it up and running. It's a Grizzly 22" 5hp saw that I'll use exclusively for resawing and straight cuts. It works wonderfully!
