NOS tape can be fine IF it's not back-coated. If it's shiny-brown on both sides, it's one material all the way through, not two materials fused together. So there's nothing that will gum up or shed. It won't be the most "advanced" tape, but it'll be fine for experimenting and messing around with.

Anything back-coated, as Rick says, should be tossed. Even if it's never been used.

I totally forgot about dropouts! Amazing how well our memory can protect us from pain.

Default Having Fun Yet Martin Maniac?

Aloha MartinManiac,

Having fun yet with your new toys & old tape?

Yeah, tape costs, tape hiss & noise reduction are what finally drove me to abandon analog for digital. Fifteen minutes of 2" tape was $46.00 bucks a pancake in the early 80's. Solo guitar tracks sounded pretty great on a Studer 1-2" reel to reel with a minimum of dbx noise reduction applied. But I got six hours of hiss-free recording time with a beta tape cartridge -in digital- with the 16-bit PCM Sony F1 digital recorder.

BTW, I had that same Tascam patchbay in your pix. It was very useful.

Was there a vocal track for the Saturday Night Boogie jam special strumming track you shared or are we left to guess on the song? Could be anything but I heard "Surfing Safari" or "Rave On" in there. Try adding a vocal track next so we can hear the old tape technology applied to voice just once again - just a bit more nostalgia please.

Your last clip didn't sound terrible at all technically. Was that the tape you shared or a CD made from the tape?

Have fun, MartinManiac. What's next? A Jecklin Disk & used Radio Shack Room Wizard? No hu-hu here - Just having' some fun.

Thanks for this amusing thread, MartinManiac.

A Hui Hou!

Default The Revolutionary Sony PCM F-1

Aloha MartinManiac,

Just for more fun.

Perhaps I could send you down a new, related gear acquisition path. The product described below - the Sony PCM F-1 was a relatively compact two-box combo (a 16-bit PCM F-1 Digital converter & the companion Sony Betamax 2000 tape transport) that was portable & which heralded in the change from analog tape to digital for home recordists & studio's almost over night. In 1977, at $1900, it was quite pricey for the times. But it was well-built & finally offered great home-recorded sound quality. It was the digital game-changer for us old-timers. There are still a few around.

The Sony PCM F-1 was truly a revolutionary audio product, perhaps the most important of the last quarter of the 20th Century. I auditioned one in LA & bought the first one for Hawaii. A lot of players & studio's here checked it out. It created quite a stir here. Wish I still had my F-1:

https://audiophilereview.com/cd-dac-...ny-pcm-f1.html

If you could find those units (the problem would be finding useable SonyBetamax tape) it would be fun to compare recordings from your 1/4" 80-8 reel-to-reel with the Sony PCM F-1 technology at the very historic point where the complete digital-to-analog conversion was taking place, right?

Just a suggestion, MartinManiac to one who likes to find deals on vintage gear & apparently has a few bucks to burn.

Take care.
alohachris

Both the "Fresh Tape" and the "Saturday Night Boogie" were recorded using the Fostex 80 8 track machine. Just having fun. No CD. The Tacam CD RW 5000 bit the dust last night, so I replaced it with a Sony DVD /VHS Player. Not interested in any more equipment at this time. Have you checked the price of 2" tape lately, you'll be in for a shock.
