Default F1 - Mercedes 'Sandbagging'

I watched the Barcelona pre-season testing results.
Ferrari were setting good times.

Mercedes started making statements like 'We need to do more work' and 'Ferrari will be hard to beat'.

Yeah, right.

Team allowed Hamilton to sit in the 'Courtesy Tent' for the first 14 minutes of one session!

Shoot out for pole;

- Hamilton sets new track record
- Bottas breaks it and sets new track record
- Hamilton responds and breaks that and sets new track record!

So what gives with their earlier statements?
Sandbagging at Barcelona?

Here's a quote from Sky F1 web site: -
"Asked by Sky F1 if he was surprised by Mercedes' fast form, Vettel dismissed the pre-season pessimism from the Silver Arrows camp as "bull"."
Early days but looking good for Mercedes. I hope Red Bull can pull their socks up and that Renault can get their car up to speed for Danny Ric.

Haha, I think he summed it up nicely!

Some great drives from the F1 newcomers and drivers that might otherwise be considered 'Number 2's'.

Absolutely, they were sandbagging, and lying.

I'll play a little 'conspiracy theory' game here.

How many ticket sales would F1 lose if Mercedes had announced just before this 2019 season 'We were the best last year, but we're going to be even better this year'?

All that interest in the 2019 driver changes and rule changes would have just lost momentum.

Don't get me wrong - full credit to Mercedes for their incredible work.... it just becomes a lot less exciting when the outcome is so predictable.

2014 - Mercedes won all but 3 races - those 3 were all won by Daniel Ricciardo
2015 - Mercedes won all but 3 races - those 3 were all won by Sebastian Vettel
2016 - Mercedes won all but 2 races - those 2 were won by Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen - one each.

Can't say I'm looking forward to another season of this type of domination .... but I'll keep watching.

Well, today's race was mostly a bore-a-rama. So much for all those aero changes making for better racing.
