Seriously. I call this musical guitar playing. Give it a chance. Around 2.00 there is some awesome single string runs that are musical and seamless and around 3.40 there is some chord melody stuff that all makes sense and is very musical. There is no need for any addition instruments. His name is Craig Ventresco. He copies no one.

I learned about Craig Ventresco some years ago, and heard him play at a coffeehouse in San Francisco where he appears on a regular basis. He is a phenomenal player.
As for technique, this is not his most impressive piece. Look him up on Youtube and see his ragtime pieces. Simply incredible. He is truly one of the great players most of us have never heard of. |

I can honestly say I've never heard of him...I wasn't sure what to make of the posted vid, so I checked a few more...
I keep reading that he plays primarily old timey Ragtime stuff, and I'm not a fan at all of the genre, although I do hear some things I can listen to from a few various artists... I also read some praise and kudos for him, so I assume he has his fans... That being said, to my ears, his playing sounds herky-jerky, erratic and about to run off the rails at any time...just not a pleasant sound to my senses at all... YMMV, but a very little bit of this goes a long way for me...

Didn't care much for the tone, but some fine moments there!

The guy has skills all right, but I didn't care for the tone of the guitar, at all.
But I was interested enough to check him out on YT. I like this one - He starts to burn it up pretty good around 3:00. I'm guessing the tone of the guitar is meant to be kind of harsh/bright/banjo-y, for lead playing. Having an accompanist mellows the overall sound.

For ragtime jazz guitar tone think of a 1917 piano player in a sporting house. Upright piano. The tone is also related to the banjo and resonator sound from traditional jazz bands. Which is also related to jug bands.

No question he's got some great stuff going on there......I found myself wondering what it would sound like if he was playing a Tippin or Ryan, or Greenfield. then again, maybe the tune needs that brashness and Old Timey element to make its mark! He also seems to lack a bit of timing....I think someone said "erratic"........that also gets in the way of things for me.
Quite the technique.....no wonder he has a following!!
