Default Stand By Me by Ben E. King (cover)

This song has been a favorite of mine since I first heard it on the radio in 1961 when I was 13 years old. Recently I was looking for a way to play this on the acoustic guitar and found that if I changed the key I could come up with an approximation of the bass rhythm pattern that was so iconic in this song.

Also, by changing the key I could make the song a whole lot more singable. It's way up at the very top of my range in the key of A. They key of F is much more comfortable.

With the capo on the 3rd fret I am playing chords as if I were in the key of D. The chords are D, Bm, G and A (or slight variations), a 1,6m,4,5 progression.

The background photo is NASA's famous "Earthrise" photo taken by astronaut William Anders during the Apollo 8 mission in late 1968. There were tens of thousands of people standing behind the Apollo astronauts on their way to the moon landing, so I thought this image was very appropriate. In addition, my father was a NASA rocket scientist, so this photo has special meaning to me.

The guitar is my Sheppard GA Ave Maria. Thanks for listening!

Thanks Dustin!

Yeah, I don't think I have ever heard anyone play this song like this, either. Thanks for your feedback Dustin! It's a fun song to sing!

Thank you!

Great to hear from you, WoodenStrings! I enjoyed this a great deal, myself. I recorded this and put this up probably earlier than I should have. Really, I just figured this out yesterday afternoon...

But it is just one of those things a person discovers -- as if it was here, waiting all along -- and I just wanted to show folks. Kind of like, "Hey, can you believe this was here all along and I only just discovered this now?"

Thanks so much for listening and taking the time to comment WS!

Thank you Bob!

I think this kind of arrangement is something many guitar players could do with just a little practice! I'm glad you thought this came out okay, Bob!

As I said elsewhere young Glenn, a unique take on an old classic. Loved it. Well done.

I love this song too, Glenn. I love your arrangement! Excellent work to include that bass line. And of course NASA is special to my family as well - nice to give tribute to them and to include that great iconic photo.
