NICE!!!!!

I keep wiping the drool off my keyboard every time I look at the figure on the 'hog.

I just re-read the first post on this thread and noticed that you were originally thinking of a sunburst. Just out of curiosity, any reason why you changed course on that front?

I look forward to reading your review! Thanks for sharing!

I'm pretty excited to give it a test drive tomorrow. I'm not sure why I decided on the plain top. It could have gone either way. I think we were both so in love with the natural look of this piece of wood that we just kept it plain. I kinda wish I had done a burst, but it's too late now. I'll be sure to maybe put one on my next Circa!

That topwood is beautiful, and it would've been a shame to cover it up, IMO.

All I know is that if John started offering hand-rubbed full body bursts... I'd commission another in an instant!

I received the OM-18/21 about a week ago and have packed as much time in playing it as I possibly could with busy work and family life. The sound matches up more or less with what I predicted a Circa OM-18 would sound like. Though I've played a number of Circas, I don't think I've ever played one with mahogany back and sides.

It's evenly balanced in response across all 6 strings, though I suspect it has the potential to develop a bit more bass over time. It already shows signs of having a little more bass than your average 18. It's loud and aggressive with plenty of headroom - no big surprise there given the style John is using for his builds and the very stiff spruce used. Although it tends to the drier side of the spectrum, as is typical for mahogany, it does have a fair amount of overtones - probably somewhere in between what I would usually expect from mahogany and rosewood. Significantly, though, the overtones don't interfere with note separation. Great note separation is one of the reasons I have so much love for mahogany.

It has the great mid-range response and plenty of sweetness in the trebles. The sound and response is really classic mahogany, to my ears. The setup is flawless, with the Plek zeroing in on exactly the relief that works for my playing. It's quite light at 3 lbs 12 oz and the graphite truss rod makes for a great physical balance (not neck heavy) when the guitar is sitting in your lap.

Build quality and workmanship is flawless - truly.

To me, this guitar is yet another demonstration of why John's work is in such high demand, and it's why I keep going back to the Circa well.

Smile Absolutely gorgeous

Not sure how I missed this all this time, but just read the ENTIRE thread!

Congratulations on a BEAUTY!!! This might be the most breathtaking Mahogany I have ever seen. And the top looks fantastic, too. No burst needed...

Enjoy it (and all of your guitars) in fine health and spirits!

Cheers

Paul

Thanks for the report! I suspect that it’s my kind of guitar and hope to play it some day.

I'm always super happy to read these posts.

I think we have a similar problem. Of John's guitars, I currently have an adi/maple OM and an adi/braz OM. I see your wonderful post and realize that I don't have an adi/hog OM to complete the triple crown.

Likewise, I think you 'need' a maple backed OM to "complete" your Circa OM collection. I'm just sayin'...

Of course I need one or each!

I actually have a trio in the works with John. 000, 00, and 0 12 frets with Adi and Braz.

Congrats!! You got me pointed at Circas a while back and I’m so glad I got mine when I did, John is making some killer guitars.

Sorry for resurrecting an old build thread. Upon reviewing this again today, I just thought the woods were so special, this thread deserved another viewing. I seem to be a sucker for Adi/Flamed Mahogany, and this Mahogany is one on the nicer sets I have seen; the depth to the curl is amazing. I’m glad this top didn’t get a burst in the end, but that’s just my preference.
