Default Original: "Homecoming" - Trying to focus on melody

I'm on of those so-called "modern finger style" guitarists and when I was in music school, I often got the criticism that my music lacked melody, which at the time I used to balk at, but recently I've realized it's pretty true. I tend to focus heavily on rhythm. This time around, I've kind of turned and have written this new piece that focuses heavily on melody, or at least I think it does. Anyway, enjoy!

It's nice but I think it's missing something, maybe add in a few seconds of just the top bass strings at certain time, but really nice to listen man thanks.

I like it. I would say it's got a strong melody and good rhythm; a good balance between the two.

I wouldn't say it focuses heavily on melody, any more than is the norm.

I like the little extra vibrato that you use to accent the occasional bass note.

Without wanting to change the subject of the thread: How do you manage to not pull the two outer strings off the fretboard on that guitar? They look extremely close to the edge, or maybe it's just the camera angle. I guess "good technique" is the answer! I would be yanking the high string off and pushing the low string overboard, LOL. Did you put in a new nut with wider spacing, or did it come like that?

Any way, nice job!

It's definitely a camera angle thing. The string spacing from the binding is not as close as it looks, and i've never pushed a string off the edge.

And thanks for the remarks! I realize this isn't a "heavy" melody and I suppose to really grasp what i'm saying about this tune, you'd have to hear my old playing. It's really about the context. This tune has more melody happening than a lot of the stuff I used to write.

In fact, I'm re-working old tunes to make them stronger melodically.

Nice playing.

The tune has a hint of melody, but not much. I have the same problem. If you listen to some professionals, Al Petteway, Tommy Emmanuel for instance, they somehow get "hummable" stuff going, but even they don't always succeed.

I've been applying the "can I hum this?" test lately to my attempts to compose and as a result I haven't been able to get anything going. I can do the "ambient elevator music" thing all day though

If a tune has a good tempo and sounds pleasant, its almost as good as solid melody, but melody really locks people into the tune.
