Martin 000-18 OR Taylor 322ce
I am considering the purchase of either a used Martin 000-18 or a Taylor 322ce 12 fret. I understand that these are two different "animals", but I would like to hear any input regarding the quality, sound, etc. of each compared to the other .
I really like 12 frets, but...

Martin is sitka/mahog and taylor is all hog. I suggest you try an all hog guitar to see if you like them as this will be a bigger difference than the 14 vs 12 fret sound.
Some people love mahogany tops some like me need the punch of spruce. In terms of a 12 vs 14 fret sound the 12 will be warmer/darker sounding the 14 will be more open. I would say I think the taylor will be more suited to fingerstyle playing, while the 000-18 will be more versatile.

Play them both and buy the one your ears tell you to.

I have one of each. My Taylor 322ce is solid Mahogany top over solid Tasmanian Blackwood back/sides and the Martin 0-00-18 is solid Spruce over solid Mahogany back/sides. The overall voicing of the Taylor is extremely close to the Martin D-15 I had, an all solid Mahogany guitar top/back/sides; after you account for the body size volume differences between the D15 & 322ce, you'd be hard pressed in a blind test to tell which was which. The Martin 000-18 with it's Spruce top is not as "dry" sounding as the all mahogany guitars, it's got a little more sparkle, but the note fundamentals are still very strong and the overtones are a bit more pronounced than the all mahogany instrument. I love both of them and even with the different top woods, they are kind of brothers from different mothers. I prefer the less mid-scooped voice of mahagony v. rosewood backed guitars. I got a cutaway 322 for single note line playing for better fret access above the 12th fret. The Martin is a trad. shaped 000 model, no cutaway. Can't go wrong with either.

Sorry, but I do not have experience with the Taylor, but love love love my 000-18! It can do it all, and very well at that! Like someone else said earlier: play both and let your ears, fingers, and heart tell you which one to buy.
Good luck and let us know which you decide on! |

I own a Martin 000-18 (2014) and a Taylor 322 (2016) and I love both.
Martin is Sitka/Mahogany while Taylor is Mahogany/Blackwood. Martin sounds clearer while Taylor a little bassy/muddy. I play fingerstyle. I would play pop and ballads on the Martin, Blues on the Taylor. Both are great guitars IMO. They stand besides my Taylors 412ce and 512 as well as my Gibsons L-00TV an L-1 1928 Blues Tribute and some other beasts... Each shows its own personality and I play and love them all as they are. ;-) That said, you have to try as two guitars crafted same days by same guys may sound differently...

I agree with most of the above but would like to add that if you're looking for a used Taylor, I believed they changed the woods a few years ago from Hog/Sapele? to Hog/Blackwood.

Unfortunately you can’t play a Mahogany guitar or a 00-18 and know what the Taylor or the 000-18 will feel or sound like. The sound, tone, volume and sustain will be completely different between these two guitars. You need to play both. Order, or go to play, both and return the one you’re not keeping.

I pulled the proverbial trigger and purchased a 2016 522ce. The guitar is inbound as I type.

Excellent choice! There was a 522 in my local store a couple of years ago that was maybe the nicest Taylor I've ever tried. And that includes the nine Taylor's that I have owned over the years, and a 1993 000-16 my wife had for a long time.

It has been a bit over a week of playing the Taylor and I am thinking that I should have purchased the 000-18 in lieu of the Taylor.
The Taylor is a wonderful instrument in it's own right, but I am missing what the spruce/mahogany combination bring to the party. I would have given the Taylor a test ride prior to purchase, but didn't have the opportunity. Oh well, such is life. Thinking I may seek out a trade for a 000-18.
