Default What to try next??

It’s under a month until I make the trip to summer NAMM. I hit the big 50 3 days before we go and I dropped the hint this evening that I didn’t want anything on my birthday and that I’d just take my in-service money and money I’ve saved and see if I found anything I wanted while we were in Nashville. The wife said, “I know what your plan is, you’re gonna get another guitar!” So I’m trying to decide what route I want to go next. I’m really wanting another Dread because I got invited to join a new bluegrass band last night to play rhythm. I LOVE my Bourgeois Slope D Banjo Killer and would really like to find a Bourgeois Vintage D, but I don’t think I can justify spending $4-5k on another guitar, even if it is a Happy 50th BD present to me. What would you good folks suggest I look at next? I like thin, fast necks like Taylor and Bourgeois guitars have. Nut width isn’t a big deal for me because I’ve had 11/16”, 23/32, and 3/4” and I’m ok with all of them. Back and side woods is something I’m open to with just about anything. Hit me up with your ideas. I know Martins will get mentioned but I’ve never really found a Martin neck that I like, so If you suggest Martin, let me know which neck they have that’s thin and fast.

Shades of Blue just posted a nice comparison of his new Taylor 717 versus his D-18 and that Taylor does sound impressive.

I’m not gonna say that I won’t try one, but I don’t think I want another Taylor. I’ve still got my ‘95 810 and have had several other Taylor dreads. While I still like my 810, my Bourgeois made me realize I like that heavier tone that I’ve never gotten from a Taylor guitar before.

I bet Nashville has a Gibson Advanced Jumbo somewhere. Great rhythm guitar with lots of punch.

Tnfiddler:

At least take the 20 minute drive to Franklin and browse Artisan Guitars: not just enticing new guitars, but a really fine selection of premium used guitars. Carter's Vintage in Nashville had a rack of new terrific Bourgeois' when I was last in.

Would urge extreme caution with that kind of money on a new git . got burned on a ( sight Unseen NEW J200 ) outta Nashville ( my fault ) many years ago . It was FLAT DEAD D O A . I sucked it up and learned from that huge mistake . never ever had a completely dead guitar ...Sounded like an electric not plugged in , I couldnt believe it ... hopefully you are well more experienced than I was at 25 or so ....,Hope ya get a Great one ...

Cool

Get a Martin 15 series? 00-15M or 000-15M would be good and it won’t cost 4-5k. I’m actually selecting for myself...if I were you...but I’m not....haha.

Taking your Martin reservations into account I wholeheartedly second this!

If you can find a reasonably priced one, Preston Thompson guitars makes wonderful Bluegrass dreadnoughts. Would definitely be an investment, but you only live 50 years twice if you live to the age of 100.

Get a well-set-up Larrivee D-40M for a lousy $1450 pittance and enjoy the heck out of it for the rest of your life!
