Took a month to learn Over the Rainbow
That's how bad I am. One month to learn the Eva Cassidy version, after poring over TABs, and listening to half-speed YouTube videos.
But I can play it now from memory, and start to practice amd improve expression. Trouble is, now I can't remember the three little 12-bar blues pieces I learned the month before.

Tony Rice says that it took him "two or three years" to learn "Shenandoah." The result was worth it:
I am grateful for many things. Among them is that I have lived in a time and place when/where Tony Rice was creating, performing, and recording music, and that I had the good fortune to be able to experience it. The beauty of his "Shenandoah" affects me emotionally. Last edited by jwing; 09-08-2018 at 11:29 AM. |

Haha, just remember I, IV, V. Or if you want to get fancy, throw in a quick VI, II, V turnaround.

At my age, it’s for some odd reason gotten easier to remember the chord-melody arrangements I’ve worked out.
However... This morning I was trying to remember the title of a tune I’d just worked out a week ago... And couldn’t. If I knew the name, I could play it! |

I don’t think that is all that unusual for a lot of people. There are many factors involved. Age, work schedule, etc. I used to work in the record biz and I could tell you the stock number of just about any album in print when in my 20’s. Yesterday It took me an hour to remember the name of someone who worked for me for five years.
Just curious which tabs you used. That song is on my list to learn and there are many versions, some being very easy, some more advanced. The main thing is that you got it down so congrats to you for that. |

The important thing is that you did it. And if you did it once you can do it again with another tune and you will get faster at it as you grow. I always tell my students to learn it correctly, not quickly.....

I have played the song for a couple years but never tried too hard to get the Iz strum pattern right.

I've tried to get the Iz pattern down......no luck. I finally just do my own thing and it sounds good to me. I "do" something between Iz and Louis "Sachmo" Armstrong. AND the reason I keep my guitars on stands in my "room" is I don't have to try to find them!

When do we really "know" a tune anyway? 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months, 3 years, a lifetime...

Lean, forget, learn, forget, learn .... There are actually some advantages to that scenario.
