Larrivee- what does the JCL logo mean?
Hello, I've been reading through this forum for a few months and learning as much as I can. I've played electric for a while and now I want to buy an acoustic. I want a travel size guitar so I've been looking at the Larrivee P-03R, redwood back and sides, spruce top, herringbone purfling, bone nut and saddle.
But a few P-03Rs that look exactly the same (and seem to have identical specs) have the JCL initials on the headstock, while some have the name Larrivee. What does the JCL logo indicate on a Larrivee guitar? Thanks for any information. |

JCL = Jean-Claude Larrivée. The JCL designation is inlaid in a headstock or added to an inside label to usually signify a "special" model that varies from the "standard" model with perhaps a different tonewood selection or other features such as inlay.

Hey, thank you for the reply!
The P-03R I intend to buy has the JCL logo, sitka top (I think), herringbone rosette, bone nut, bone saddle. Most P-03Rs have the Larrivee logo, sitka top, herringbone rosette, bone nut, saddle made of another material. The fancy P-03Rs have the JCL logo, moonwood top, abalone rosette, bone nut, bone saddle. So the guitar I'm intending to buy has elements of both models. It differs from the standard P-03R because of the JCL logo and bone saddle. I'm just a little confused about it. I think I'll buy it, it's a decent price, although the rosewood back is not the best example I've seen. Anyway, thanks much for the information. Edit: It appears this P-03R gets the JCL inlay logo because of the additional feature of alpine moonwood for the bracing. I think it's otherwise identical to the current crop of P-03Rs. I don't know how reliable my source is, but I bought the guitar, it's on its way. Last edited by acgprf; 03-03-2024 at 04:23 PM. |

Welcome to AGF, and, congrats on the soon to arrive Larrivée.
One thing you needn't worry about, are the woods Larrivée chooses. Jean has a very good reputation for knowing wood choices.

Oh well, NGD wasn't the day I'd hoped for. The Larrivee had to be returned, some weird marks in the fretboard. I hoped the store could send another, but they were out of stock. The only P-03R I could find new in stock is the "upgraded" version with moonwood and abalone. So I ordered that. I don't enjoy a pyramid bridge, but it'll be fine.
It's over 600 miles to the nearest store that carries Larrivee guitars. I'm not a fan of ordering an acoustic guitar online. I only played the P-03R for five minutes, but I loved it! |

You can't go wrong with a Larrivee...parlors especially included. Enjoy the new NGD!

Define "weird marks in the fretboard". Larrivee has never dyed their wood, so often their ebony will be quite streaky.

I ordered a 00-40M with some custom options this week. It'll be a few months so I'm just trying to forget about it.

acgprf - welcome to the AGF and to the Larrivee brand. I’m also a relative newbie to them also, and IMHO they have a sound all their own. And if you’re interested in learning more about the brand check out the forum. Hope you find your next one meets your expectations.

It was a nice guitar other than that, it played like a dream. I couldn't keep it, though, it's too expensive to settle for something that I know would bother me every time I played it. @salsarev You're right, of course it's rosewood, I don't know why I wrote redwood. @fantex Congratulations! |
