Default Tinted finishes

At what point does coloration happen in the finish process, every coat or just at the end?

Couple of different ways

If you want strong grain lines showing you typically stain the wood and the clear coat over the top

If you want to reduce the grain look you add colour into the first 3 coats of finish then follow up with clears

I spray a couple coats of clear and level sand to make sure the grain is sealed. Mask anything I don’t want colored. Then color coats. Unmask, then build with clear.

Is most of the finish in clear coats? I mean in overall amount/steps.
