Default Luthier Referral NYC Area

I just bought a 1905-ish Washburn parlor guitar in NYC and need a luthier experienced with this era to set it up and perhaps do a neck reset and re-fretting.

Looking for recommendations......

You may want to give Evan Gluck a call and see if he can help you.

He's a great luthier and works out of his West Side apartment.

Good luck!

Rick

Here’s a Fretboard Journal article and video about Tom Crandall of T.R. Crandall Guitars in NYC repairing two old Stella guitars. Tom used to be the repairman at Matt Umanov’s.

Evan is great, but I don't think he does neck resets. I asked him about it once.

Evan is great, but you’re right, he does not do neck resets. He did a setup for me in Feb—and recommended Tom Crandall for a neck reset. The neck job has been with Tom for five months. (He told me it would be at least three.) I called today, and the guitar should be ready this weekend. I think COVID caused a surge of interest in guitars, and more work for good luthiers than they could handle. Evan also recommended Brooklyn Lutherie and, outside of the city in
Teaneck NJ, Ian Davlin and in Orangeburg NY, Alex Glasser. I researched them all and chose Crandall. But all are good. One of the guys outside the city (I forget which) told me he was as swamped and not accepting new work. That may have changed. All these options are pricey.
