well they probably didn't have a lot of 116 degree days in Portland before, since the previous record was 107 and last seen in 1981.

Indeed I grew up just outside Portland from 1955 to 1975 we and almost no neighbors I recall, had air conditioning because, if I remember correctly, 85 was a pretty hot summer day, and it was rare to see mid 90's let alone 100 +

I've been in PDX since the early 70's. The idea of 116 degree heat back then would only occur in the milieu of an apocalyptic sci-fi movie. By the third day my house inside was close to 100 except for the basement and one small room where I was running a portable AC non-stop. I'm pretty sure at least one of my 40 year old native rhodys is going to die as well as one of my 25 year old hydrangeas. I've been watering them twice a day. The Doug Firs are also looking quite stressed. Today its low 90's and feels like heaven.

To put it into perspective

Portland, Oregon, broke its longstanding all-time record high (107°F from 1965 and 1981) on three days in a row – a stunning feat for any all-time record – with highs of 108°F on Saturday, June 26; 112°F on Sunday; and a preliminary 115°F on Monday. That 115°F is equal to the average daily high on June 28 at Death Valley, California.

49c/120f forcasted for Kamloops, British Columbia. Here in Calgary, 37c/98F, tomorrow.

That said, I spent three semesters at U of A, in Tucson. I've been where we are about to venture, up here in the Great White North!

Remember the brutal Midwest drought and heatwave of 2012-13?

I’m absolutely roasting yet it’s freezing here in Scotland compared to what you guys are reporting. Still, it was hot enough in my kitchen that I had to put my chocolate in the fridge as it was a melted mess.
