Default Favorite gigging seat/chair

Hi folks,

For those that play (gig) sitting, what is your guitar seat of choice?

Thanks!

Something I made myself. Folds, comfy, adjustable height for both seat and footrest, not too heavy, a place to put feet that's big enough...

When I have a choice in the matter, a stack of two milk crates to sit on and a single crate as a foot rest. That puts the seat height at about 21" and my right foot a little less than 12" off the floor

In the real world it won't always be possible to hit those dimensions precisely, so I worry more about getting my right thigh up high enough to avoid crouching over the guitar - bad for my back and also interferes with my ability to sing

Never been a fan of playing an acoustic guitar standing up. Tried the two most common ways of attaching a strap and the geometry never works out right for me. Strangely enough, when I play electric bass, standing up works much better than sitting although I can cope with either situation

Back when I gigged somewhat, I'd use any kind of chair handy, sometimes a folding chair, but sometimes a regular "dining room" chair that coffee shops would have for customers. I've become a rest the acoustic guitar on the left thigh player, but I can cope without a footstool playing that way.

I'm currently a fan of drum thrones. Height adjustable, and the well-padded ones would be comfy for the typical hour-long set. Since I haven't played live for a few years, I'm not carrying one around for live sets though, I just use them in my studio space. I do use a footstool to raise my left leg there. I also have one of those Roc'n'Soc stools that use the drum throne padded tractor seat on the top in my studio space. More comfortable that most inexpensive bar stools I think. I use it when directing sessions in the studio space because the height lets me see and be seen better than my drum stool.

With the band, we use whatever seats the venue has available - you learn to take the rough with the smooth!

If I’m playing solo, I play standing. Looks more professional, IMHO, and I find I sing better.

At home, either my office chair or a dining table chair, depending on the room I’m playing in.

I use a Sound Seat at home. For my first gig, I recently bought a Roc-n-Soc with the foldable legs which I can detach from the seat. Cost as it was half of the Sound Seat. I like thrones that can adjust the height with the Roc-n-Soc much cheaper and more portable. Both seats have their fans.

I've got a SoundSeat in the guitar room. With it, back and butt pain are simply no longer in the equation.

In the studio where work I play in either a padded stool or a wooden chair. They aren't nearly as comfortable.

Default Any chair with no back

I prefer a chair - any chair with no back will do. Personally I don't like the bar stool thing. Always makes me feel like a child in a high chair with my feet hanging down. Although I sing when I play and I know that probably standing is better for that - I find I can't seen the fret board as well as when I sit. The dots sometimes just aren't enough and hard to see - especially under the stage lights.

I use two different chairs.

The wood one I use for our local Bluegrass jams a couple times a month and the other one is the one I take camping

I added a bit wider base to the legs of the wood one because we often play outside on soft surfaces.

I only play around the house. I sit on whatever is closest to me, coffee table, folding chair, sofa, dining chair, whatever. The only thing I don’t care for are counter/bar height chairs.

For gigging I use a Rockvillle RDS42. The seat is adjustable from 22 - 31" in height, with an adjustabe foot rest. I installed a swivel under the 10" diameter seat, which lets you "move" a little when seated. I mounted a guitar holder to the adjustabe, seat, back rest. I also mounted a couple of polyurethane skateboard wheels to the rear leg assembly so it can be "towed / dragged" instead of carried (weighs about 16 lbs). It is well made and comfortable.

Padded bar stool, preferably with back support.

But I can still strap up and stand.

Be well and sit well,

Don
