You pack your guitar in the hard case.

1 - if there is room in the overhead you put it in the overhead.
2 - if there is no room, you ask the flight attendent to please stow it.
3 - if that is still a no go, you ask for a "gate-check" tag.

When gate checking you want the colored gate check tag not a white tag. With gate check they hand carry it down the stairs to the plane, then hand carry it back up and you grab it with the strollers and car seats.

I normally fly Southwest (737s), and don't normally have an issue finding overhead bin space.

NOT ALL AIRLINES ARE THE SAME.

I know a LARGE airline where gate checks are hand carried down however all but strollers and wheel chairs come back up. The rest goes to baggage claim.

ASK.

The gate check tags are color coded for whether they come back up or go to baggage claim. That was my point. You want the tag color that comes back to the jetway.

Color depends on the airline.

I just flew a number of legs with an APSE, and used a Visesnut case. Very light, and has a cloth cover and strap that would allow you to treat it like a gig bag, but I just checked it - I'd rather not have to deal with a guitar in the airport, etc. Between the CF guitar and the Visesnut, nothing was likely to happen to it.

Thanks Doug.

Btw your Fingerstyle Hymn book arrived and I love it. The presentation of the basic song, coupled with different ways of introduction and finish, tips on accompanying a singer, and how to add arpeggios and embellishments such as playing lower on the neck, etc, are exactly what I need to learn.

I started working with it last evening and next thing you know it was after midnight!

I also appreciate the link to be able to listen to you play the song.

This book will keep me busy forva long time!

Russ

I wasn't familiar with the Visesnut case until this post. Impressive! I haven't seen a case that allows fast/easy adjustment for a snug fit. Looks like they start around $750.

I have probably flow over 100,000km with my Rainsong CH-PA under the plane (back and forth across Canada, and one trip to Maui). I use the SKB iSeries case (essentially a Pelican style case for a guitar). The one I have is the classical guitar one (fits my Taylor and flamencos as well). I just pack a few clothing items around the CH-PA body to fit it.

The case is very heavy (30lbs) but has wheels (and I check it anyway). However, it is well priced at $300, have trouble justifying a case that costs as much or more than the guitar .

Later
Rob
