Default Who knew ravens could talk?

I obviously know parrots can talk, and I know ravens are also very smart, but I honestly never knew ravens could talk and they sound more "human" than parrots to me:

Edgar Allan Poe (he who likely died of rabies, by the way)--master of several literary genres, including macabre short stories, acts of poesy, and tales of ratiocination (that's what Poe called his detective stories that involved logical reasoning)--knew that ravens could talk:

Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”

Ravens, crows, magpies, other corvidae, super intelligent birds.

Ravens are BIG, as Post #1 shows. That bust of Pallas must have been pretty substantial.

They are so clever they keep the Tower of London and England safe.

Absolutely true - I've never seen a raven playing a banjo...

In one of Dicken's lesser known (but still great) works, Grip the raven is the constant (and possibly more intelligent) companion of "Barnaby Rudge," and is constantly spouting his learned phrases and sound effects, often at the most comedic of times.

Really smart birds. A minor hobby of mine is observing and feeding the local crows. They'll eat darn near anything. They show up at about the same times each day looking for food. It's amazing the ways they can break up large pieces of food.

Michigan's upper peninsula has the biggest ravens I've ever seen.

Maybe the magpies taught the ravens how to talk....

That's my chuckle for the afternoon!

We had lots of ravens around when I lived in Alaska - much bigger than crows and VERY smart. Over time I watched ravens pick out all the insulation from my neighbor's airplane engine cover to build their nests. I used to cluck and make noises to talk with them, although it wasn't clear just what I was saying. My all time favorite observation was watching a raven come in to land on an icy patch. His feet slipped out from underneath him and he fell on his butt in a most undignified way. Got up, shook himself off, and looked around as if to say, "I meant to do that".

An article tracing the connections between Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Dickens, and the Tower of London ravens:

Default They also steal

I was on a kayaking trip through the Grand Canyon in the summer of 1983 and there were several ravens on the cliffs opposite one of our campsites.

When we left camp to go for a hike, the ravens wasted no time invading our camp and pillaging our stuff.

They dragged most of my gear out of my open dry bag, emptied my wallet and took my last $2.

Lesson learned. I kept my bag tightly closed for the rest of the trip.

Apparently it's not just ravens that are intelligent.

Many years ago drove from LA to San Diego and stopped at a view point rest stop overlooking the ocean.

As I pulled in to park, a seagull was in the parking space, and I slowly drove forward forcing him to move.

When I returned there were "friendly reminders" all over the top of my car, windshield and back window. Made a real mess.
