Default Tuning a baritone dulcimer to standard

Would it be possible? Strings would have a bit more tension than a hi e on guitar.

Good advice - take it...

My friend has two dulcimer's. One of them is a baritone. She tried tuning it to DAD standard, but the strings snapped. I'm surprised because she should reach D4 on a 29.5 scale. Slightly more tension than a hi e on a standard guitar.

Is it a McSpadden?

If so, then the body is the same as the standard dulcimers. It is the string gauges and nut slots and bridge slots that differ.

You will need lighter strings to go up to DAdd.

I've played and studied traditional noter/drone mountain dulcimer for many years. And I used to play dobro in a bluegrass band.

Why don't YOU go buy a baritone dulcimer and try it?
Of course tuning a baritone dulcimer to "standard" kind of defeats the purpose of a baritone dulcimer but...

PS. Why is "she" tuning it up a whole step? Why not use a capo?
