Ultrafox (Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli cover, with my own vocal and lyric)
This has always been my favorite tune of Le Quintette du Hot Club de France, but not being a jazz guitarist, let alone able to emulate the gypsy jazz style, I wondered what I could with it. So rather than attempt a purely instrumental copy, I thought about creating a vocal melody based on the main motif and what would work with the chords. I based my rhythm guitar accompaniment on a couple of arrangements (or rather interpretations) that I found, playing in my own style with my preferred chord inversions.
For the lyric, I wondered what, or rather who, could "Ultrafox" be? So, I imagined a wily, foxy character, living on his wits and cunningly taking advantage of restaurant staff, casino croupiers, gamblers, and taxi drivers, and returning each night to his humble abode where he lives alone. |
