Thanks Tom! And I have more progress pics on the neck.

Bog oak fingerboard and front veneer purfled in Mahogany from “The Fiddleback Tree”. Pops!!

And frets in, leveled and trimmed. I believe (if my eyes are not playing tricks on me) that the perpendicular fret is on fret number 11. Neck carve begins.

And the first coat of epoxy filler goes on! The usual “suntan” shot from the balcony. John says this always highlights the rough spots for repeated refinement - sand and coat and sand and coat until it feels like a baby’s bum. In the end there will be 3-4 coats of lacquer.

And we can see the transformation very well.

John assured me that even while we are gunning for a satin finish on the neck, the flames of the maple will show. Happy also to report that the Alessi’s are a great match. Really really pleased with the selection of a maple neck and the maple highlights at this point.

Thanks Paul! And you might be interested to know that having played your recent Mitchell, the feel of the neck left an indelible mark on me. So I am having John copy the asymmetric profile on mine. I think it plays very smoothly, feels very comfortable and somehow very ergonomic.

It will sport a 1 23/32 nut width, C on bass side, V on the treble, slim profile, and satin finished (of course).

While the neck work was ongoing the body was concurrently being prepared for finishing.

As planned we are going with dark Brazilian binding and the bevels will be crazy quilted maple with a fade in fade out effect. This will create a similar theme throughout the guitar with the maple highlights on the rosette, end graft, heel cap, neck center laminate and backstrap.

Here’s John gluing on BRW layers to aid in the faded transition on the arm bevel.

Bevel gets roughed in, while maple get chosen and bent to shape.

Then it goes in and gets taped up!

John asked, when he sent me some of these pictures, if I liked ugly pictures? I think it’s worth pointing out that I appreciate every bit of that hard work that is the blood (hopefully not), sweat (for sure at this time of the year) and tears (again hopefully not) of the luthier, which the uglies are representative of. In life we go through so many difficult moments but they are usually masked by the pretties to be shown on social media. Are those true of the process, yes perhaps, but usually hard work (and uglies) are the bedrock for the good stuff at the end. Not going to turn this any more philosophical but my reply to John was simply “keep ‘em coming! I love your progress pics in all shapes, forms and fashions!”

A little bit more cleanup work to be done but the idea is there. On the opposite end I think the cutaway finger bevel is almost done too.

That's wisdom there, Han. As the buddhists say: no mud, no lotus. None of it is ugly.

The bevel is a tasteful complement to the redwood (!!!) and the blackwood. Very nice.

It’s actually kind of fun following thread. I remember doing that but forgot how it looked. I enjoy revisiting those steps with your commentary.

John and Hanter--that is really looking beautiful!

I know the finish will only enhance the beauty even more.

And the sound will be glorious--can't wait!

Kudos and congrats!

Hey John, I can only try my best. If I have provided wrong/misleading info (especially technically related stuff) in my commentary, please forgive and correct me!!!

The back is jaw dropping. Magic happens in this whimsical place called The White Room.

This is one coat of clear and special effects from Tony to come next!!!

Thanks Jamie, I’m afraid I have to agree!

This sweet baby is gonna live in a Visesnut Premier Dreadnought sized case. Am very happy with the cool satin finish and the dark blue interior. The color though (Pearl Black) gives off an industrial vibe, much like ruthenium or tantalum that’s popular in other circles and while the overall look is understated it’s also not as flat as pure black. Just enough to be slightly different. Well done Khun Visesnut.

I decided on the Visesnut mainly because it’s a great in-between in terms of price, function and looks.

It’s not the cheapest or most expensive (ALWAYS order through your luthier or PM me if you want more details), but I assure you at this price point the value can’t be beat.

We all know it does not offer the greatest protection compared to, like a Calton or a Hoffee, but it is significantly lighter and comes in at only 4lbs! For non heavy-duty users like me I think it’s perfect. The outer bag (additionally purchased) will also give more insulation and protection to the guitar and case itself, should you need to travel with it. The case comes with 2 backstraps which you can attach/detach as required if you prefer to carry it like a backpack. Neat!

I have traveled a fair bit with Visesnut cases, and have not had any problems. Of course, I ALWAYS bring the guitar on the plane, unless it is a small shuttle at the end of the journey where I hand the guitar to the person who puts it directly on the plane, and someone hands it directly to me when I get off the plane. Calton and Hoffee are classier for sure - and probably offer better climate control - but I like the balance of light weight and strength in the Visesnut.

There you go. Thanks for the affirmation on my choice Jamie. I too like the balance of light weight and strength offered.

Since you spoke about climate control, have you used any external climate control packs out there (Humidipak, Oasis, MusicNomad etc) to better regulate the humidity in these Visesnuts? Any recommendations?

Well, when I took my Petros Applecreek to the Peruvian Amazon - heh heh - I included 3 Humidipaks in the case, and I waited a day in Peru and a day back home to open the case. No cracks, and the guitar still sounds good. I own guitars that I would not think about subjecting to that, mind you. Normally I keep two Humidipaks in the case when I take a guitar anywhere. Disclaimer: I am sure there are lots of folks here who are more knowledgeable than I am about best practice.
