Default NGD - Martin Custom Shop D-28 GE

I've actually had this for a couple months, but just now got around to taking pics. I've been looking for the right Martin dread for mostly rhythm and vocal accompaniment--both flatpicking and fingerpicking--and I found it in this guitar. It's a Custom Shop 14-fret standard scale dreadnought built to GE specs, so basically a D-28 GE. A nice Adirondack top with some lovely cross-silking, super straight-grained EIR back and sides, 1-3/4" nut, 2-1/4" string spacing at the saddle, 5/16" Scalloped Adirondack Golden Era Bracing, Genuine Mahogany Mod-V neck (my preference) with 30's style heel, Long Pattern diamond & square abalone fingerboard inlays, Gloss body with Aging Toner on the top and a Satin finished neck, Schaller nickel open-backed tuners, Bold Herringbone top inlay.

So spec-wise, nothing too spectacular here. It's just an average grade Adi top, with a bit of runout that I generally would have passed on; but, it didn't bother me on this guitar--mainly because when I played it, I couldn't put it down...it just sounded "right" for what I was looking for. Excellent bass, but also well balanced, surprisingly resonant for a brand new Adi topped guitar (doesn't sound tight at all), and a dream to play--easily the best out-of-the-box set-up on a Martin I've maybe ever encountered. I also recently had a strap button and K&K Pure Mini installed. Kudo's to the Martin Custom Shop luthier who built this one, as he/she took average materials and turned them into a wonderful sounding instrument. Evidence to me that a skilled craftsman is far more important than the wood & steel they construct with...

Awesome guitar. I would love to have one like that with the 2 1/4 string spacing.

Beautiful guitar, seems you’ve found your hearts desire. Congratulations!
I’m a bit new to this but can someone explain what “a bit of runout” is. The op says the top has runout, not sure what that is or what the ramifications would be.

Adirondack (Red Spruce) tops, in particular, can have a variation on color at the top seam resulting in "runout". It's where the two half of the top don't quite match up. At least that's what I think it is...

Then it’s where you see the two half’s of the top are a little different color which makes the seam in the center of the top visible, is that about right?

Congrats on a GREAT axe!

I recently bought a '37 D-28A / VTS that has, frankly, some very unattractive Madagascar back and sides. Just dull and featureless...

But the TONE was so great I could easily look past those shortcomings that I would normally have considered “no go”.

It’s all about TONE!

Lovely Martin, sometimes a slight "flaw" becomes a thing of character that makes you love it so much more.

Solid photo work as well, enjoy in good health for years to come.

That is a lovely guitar drplayer. Luv the specs and don't mind the V neck either. I love the pics too, great pics.
