Default New Guitar Day. Bedell Coffee House

I have been on more of an electric kick the last year or so, but I spotted this guitar a few hours away in Bend, where they are made, and i figured it was a beautiful day for a drive and to check out this guitar. I had been in contact with the seller for a few days and finally decided to drive 3 hours each way to check it out. The price was really good, so I felt the drive and gas cost was justified.

Apparently the seller’s ex-husband had worked at Two Old Hippies and he left the guitar seven years ago after their divorce. Her kids didn’t want to play so I didn;t feel weird about the scenario. unfortunately when i got the guitar in hand I noticed that most of the neck and a few small spots on the body had finish blushing. I was bummed but not heartbroken. The heartbreak came when I realized there was a 10” crack down the side. I pondered and threw out a number. I know the guitar was not cheap new, nor are they cheap used, but for the price of roughly 4 tanks of gas, i brought home a local (Oregon) made guitar.

Two of the tuners were busted, probably happened at the same time as the crack, but she suggested I head over to Two Old Hippies for parts while I was in town. Breedlove, Bedell and Webber mandolins are all made in Bend and it’s as just a few minutes away. They were awfully nice at their facility and the secretary grabbed a guy off of the floor to help me. A few minutes later and out the door I went with matching tuners for free.

With a little setup and some fresh 12’s, it had 13’s on it, it really sings. To be honest, it sounded like complete and utter dog sh*t when I first strung it up, but I knew it had good bones. After an hour or so of playing with old strings it started to sound a little better, but it wasn’t until I put on the new strings did it sound like a quality guitar. This might be one of the easiest playing acoustics I’ve played and the Adirondack really sings.

While I have no problem buying a broken guitar, the price better reflect the issues and generally heavily in my favor. I figured a quality American made Adirondack over East Indian Rosewood guitar was worth a small gamble and I felt it needed to be repaired properly and potentially find a new home once fixed, or it may become a spectacular sounding beach guitar.

pdx ..... Yep, a good broken guitar is better than a bad mint one any day! I'm sure you got a good deal! I would have that crack cleated though. That kind of crack keeps getting bigger, with the pressure of the curved wood.

Your post was well timed. I am driving into Bend today and happened to browse its Craigslist guitar listings to see what might be for sale and actually saw this guitar’s adl listed. It did look curiously low priced for a Bedell Coffeehouse dread. Good for you for buying it before I could be tempted…I really don’t need another guitar!

I paid half the asking price, so it was well worth the 6 hour round trip and $40 in gas.

That’s dirt cheap even for a “beach guitar.” Sweet find.

I am pretty sure a professional repair can make that crack almost disappear. If you look at GluBoost repair videos on YouTube they can do amazing things. Plus the fact that it’s EIR will make it easier to hide. I think you definitely scored the deal of the month, and maybe 2022. Great find. Sometimes going out of your way can really payoff.

I had an early 64 dread that still had nitro and used the old logo. It was fantastic, and I was foolish to let it go (twice. I bought it back once). I bet yours is also killer! Enjoy.

That’s what I was hoping for. I figured with the dark grain on the EIR it should be pretty easy to hide.

It may be my score for the year, though I hope it’s not. I have had a fair amount of scores over the years and I hope it doesn’t end any time soon.

Nice. Bedell makes some **** nice stuff. I've got a couple of Breedlove's currently, but haven't had a Bedell around in a while.

Nothing too hard to fix at all, well worth the gas

PDX, congrats on the Bedell! 6 hours driving in Oregon can be beautiful once you get off the I-5 and the often crazy traffic. It's a beautiful on the way to Bend.
