Default Why I hate to use different tunings?

Even drop D. When I see a alternate tune, I simply refuse. Shell I have more guitars? I don’t know

Haha, I don't know why, but I DO know what you mean. It's not like it's really that hard to do, but if I have to retune to play a song I'll just play something else as if it's asked me to do a neck reset before I can play it.

Hate to say it, but if you find yourself often playing different tunings, the best way to deal with it is to have a guitar dedicated to a specific tuning.

For what it's worth, I currently have both a 6 string and a 12 string dedicated to DADGAD.

I have a guitar dedicated to drop tunings. It wears bluegrass gauge strings.

I don't worry about it too much if its just drop D - I'm not that lazy. However for some of the others (DADF#AD, DADGAD, FACGCE etc.), I do like having a dedicated guitar as it minimizes barriers to playing a song in that tuning. It also gives me a legitimate reason to own another guitar.

What a great point! I only have to convince my wife for that. But first I need to explain her what the alternate tunings are. This seems to be a problem

Seriously I have forgotten many great tunes because of that

My Larrivee is almost always in an alternate tuning. I keep my Ovation in standard or dropped D as well as my classical. The Larrivee just "shines" in alternate tunings like C or G as well as DADGAD. My Ovation is my primary flatpicking guitar and the Larrivee is primarily fingerstyle.

...a good tuner and quality tuning machines make it pretty darn easy to drop in and out of various tunings.......it sure opens up a lot of territory with some low hanging fruit ripe for the picking...pun intended...I see no need for extra guitars dedicated to alternate tunings but some folks like the added convenience...

I'm with you. Drop D I can live with. But I've spent a lot of years getting the fretboard down...I don't want my notes moving around on me.

My guitar teacher is urging me to go ahead and retune, so that i do some ear training each time i retune, and so i am not afraid of alternate tunings. I have been trying this out with a six string, changing from standard to drop D to double drop D to Open C, depending upon the tune.

But I haven’t fully embraced his advice: I still keep my 12 in Open G, and wont consider changing that right now. And i have one 6 string devoted to Open D, because i am still a bit lazy/reluctant.

Doesn't re-tuning frequently shorten the life expectancy of the strings? That's my issue.
