Default Ultimate List of Songs for Solo Performer?

I'm sure this topic is already on AGForum somewhere, but I'm fairly new here and haven't found it if it does so... let's start one (or at least a new one, an admin can move this post to the right place if it already exists).

List songs that lend themselves to a solo acoustic guitar performer. (You can throw in good duet songs too, but please note that in the suggestions.)

Post away, my brethren... post away...

Rather than post my setlist or give you a random list of songs, I will offer 2 pieces of advice.

1) Check out a guy named Mike Masse. His albums are on iTunes and he has many Youtube videos. IMHO this guy has the whole bar cover song act down to a science. If you go to his webpage, he has his entire songlist, many with links to Youtube videos.

2) Build your setlist around songs drunk people know the lyrics to. This will make you very popular.

My most recent acoustic solo gig I did a couple of Mississippi John Hurt tunes, an Elizabeth Cotton song, some John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, an original, a 1920's swing tune, a couple of Bob Wills, two early Rockabilly songs, and a Leo Kottke. It went down well :-)

Kind regards
Derek

The 'ultimate' list depends on the venue and your audience ... we often prepare the set list depending on the type of crowd we find in the bar based on expeirence, and then often change again on the night once we see how the crowd is responding. If they want to chill and talk we play laid back material, if they had a few shots and wanna rock out we'll throw in some suitable numbers ... thats how i approach the ultmate set list.

I'll keep adding songs to the list. It will make a good reference. Thanks for your suggestions. Keep 'em coming.

Copyright infringements and Royalties are a concern are a main consideration for the gigging musician / soloist. With that in mind to maximise returns for your efforts (work) obviously writing your own material is the most desirable and rewarding solution, failing this arranging 'copyright expired' material is the way to go and you have the legal rights to your recorded / printed / tutorial arrangements, eg. 'Trad Arr' or Classical compositions which I default to on the odd occasion when I want to get in touch with my Gaelic (Celtic) roots (50 years old so their copyright has expired in the UK). When you have a 'body of work' amassed given the above considerations you can 'afford' (literally) to include the occasional copyrighted piece that 'appeals' to your audience.

Hi Geo - how's it going?

With regard to copyright issues -

I can't speak for the US, but in the UK, the responsibility for, and costs of, compliance with copyright licensing law with respect to music performed by live musicians lies with the venue (or promoter of an an event). As such, performers may perform as many covers "live" as they wish without incurring costs.

Performers may not, though, use recorded backing tracks in their performance of cover songs without incurring additional copyright responsibilites which they themselves must discharge. Nor may they sell recordings of covers without the necessary permissions which may (probably will!) involve fee payment (usually at the CD making stage).

That's the exact opposite of my understanding here in the U.S. The venue, as ocarolan points out, is responsible for covering the ASCAP/BMI and similar costs. As I understand it...

Not to hijack the thread.... great idea! I'll add Paul McCartney's Another Day to the list, as well as Duncan Shiek's Barely Breathing, David Gray's Babylon and The One I Love, the Lovin' Spoonful's Daydream, Chris Isaak's Wicked Game, Kenny Loggins' Danny's Song... I'll be back with more!....

slewis, that is my understanding too, presumably under the assumption that the venue (bar) is benefiting from the performer and those copyrights?

But what if the venue is a street corner?

Where I live, I don't see buskers getting hassled about this.

Sorry for any confusion guys, I was taking it to the obviously not obvious conclusion - that one would have a product representative of your gig to sell all those folks who asked "are you on iTunes".
My response was to do with developing a working repertoire that would generate the best financial outcome for your work.
