This is certainly a possibility, there are guys out in SE Asia who will do an awful lot of fancy inlay work for very little money. As has been suggested, get a mirror inside the soundhole, most luthiers will write something on the underside of the top.

My understanding is that it was an officially-sanctioned Chinese communist opera first, and subsequently Eno liked the title and used it for his album, then much later that film was made.

My reference is to the Eno album, not either of the other things.

The other unusual thing is the neck joining the body at the 13th fret!

Daryl,
I dont mind the skepticism. I am skeptical myself. I just havent seen veneer Macassar before so I hope its solid. Also many of the imports seem to implement design elements that are either popular, cost effective, easy to manufacture or easy to rebrand. Many of these elements dont seem popular or cost effective or easily re-brandable. That being said I have seem some of those elements in imports but not all of them in the same import.

It shipped today so I'll be crossing my fingers until then.

Right. When China first opened up to the US in the early 70’s, that was one of the cultural imports. There were also incredible watercolor landscape posters you could buy for $1.25, and which I decorated my first apartment with.

13 fret guitars aren't that uncommon, especially in luthier built guitars. I have a 13 fret Halcyon NL-00 and I know other builders have that option as well.

Right, even the mainstream builders make 13 fret guitars.
Martin has a few 13 fretters including their fairly recent SC-13E model, Santa Cruz has the H13 and of course Gibson's Nick Lucas model was a 13 fretter.

13 fret necks are quite nice in every way, that is actually a plus in my book. i'm pulling for you, hope its a great guitar and excellent in every way. I do like the body shape and headstock profile shape.

it may be a luthier in study build and may be the reason for all the inlay and ornamentation.

keep us updated, this is an interesting thread for sure.

I do alot of purchasing via goodwill and there are a number of them that sell via Ebay. I have these all saved as my "Saved Sellers" and I get a daily feed from them. I usually take a look just in case. If a guitar (or Ukulele) is not properly marked they just list it as unknown or unbranded because they didnt pay anything for the items. So you can get lucky. I got 2 Kamaka Ukes, a 1939 Gibson KES, and a couple of SIGMAS this way. They are not competition free but there are far less people looking at them. You can get unlucky too. I have purchased a couple of duds. So far the upside has outweighed the downside. You also have to be willing to do some work as many are not cared for. If you decide to check them out the best advice I can give is that if its not sold with a hardcase its gonna have more than playwear. They must just lay these things on top of one another or just lean them all in a big row. Again they didnt pay anything so they dont care.

I know they're not that uncommon, I have one myself, it's just an unusual detail I was pointing out as no one else had mentioned it.

I have 3 13fretters. One is a production model. No red flags for me over this.

So perhaps this is an indication that it is more likely a custom build? or at least not a cheapo import?

Got my shipping notification. It will be in my hands by Thursday next week.

So, starting with the ampersand, I see an "S" and a "G" which got me looking through a list of luthiers for some form of this combo... Which brought me to Kirk Sand of "Sand Guitars". Even the key name of "Sand" is part of "Ampersand" which would be cool if this solve happens to work...

His new logo is different, but the stylized font has a little of the fish hook barb elements to it as well... He's located in (sandy) Laguna Beach and has made guitars for Chet Atkins, Tommy Emmanuel, Sambora, Jerry Reed, and more. It would be cool if this is part of the guitar's story!

Reach out to Kirk and see if he crafted this one.
