Default Let's gossip about Kieran Murphy

So I was just randomly browsing Wikipedia and found out that Tommy Emmanuel had an 'understudy' (whatever that means) called Kieran Murphy. YouTube videos of him are pretty good, and further Google searches show much praise for his album Per Se. There's also a lot of interesting stuff like how he's disappeared and how people who ordered his CD and tab books never received them, or received burnt copies.

Does anyone know anything more? I'm curious!

My personal favourite:

I know nothing. Intrigued. The guitar playing in the video was top shelf. If he blew a cog I hope he makes it back

Question

I am also intrigued.

Discovered him through the Tommy Emmanuel forum and downloaded his albums....wow!

He is a modern day Michael Hedges!

How can he just disappear?

Yeah, I've wondered about him for a while now. Per se is a great album with 3 or 4 incredible compositions on it. Anybody can build up "chops" with enough time to woodshed, but he has the appeal that's harder (or impossible) to teach - depth of influence and taste. Bootleg Escapade is one of those few compositions that I truly wish I wrote.

Looks like he put out an album last year. Anyone heard it?

Check out the Tommy Emmanuel forum, there are threads on there about it. Its twice hes disappeared now allegedly he was disappointed with sales of his last album amongst other things and now focuses on a career in graphic design work.

Interesting! To be fair, carving out a career in graphic design is easier than doing it as a solo guitarist ....but not by much.

Did you download them legally? If so, where can I find them?

I enjoy discovering new-to-me great guitar players. There is nothing I like about gossip.

I saw and heard Kieran Murphy play back in 2007 as an opening act for Tommy Emmanuel in Syracuse, NY. He was very good on the guitar, but appeared to be quite uncomfortable on stage. Tommy asked him how he liked being in the Fingerlakes Region of New York State and Kieran said, in essence, that he didn't particularly care for it or for being away from home (Australia). I chalked it up to his having a bad day, but from what I observed, Kieran did not seem to like being an entertainer.

IMO, that life is not for everyone; in fact, very few people can do well making a living at making music. If Kieran is happy working in graphics arts, that's a good thing. He can still do music on the side, like most of the rest of us, and maybe even enjoy it more.
