I have an Ibanez acoustic bass (my only bass) that was given to me, and as Glen Campbell once said, "I play bass, but I'm not a bass player." I think in terms of guitar, so my mind works in the keys of A, C, D, E, F sometimes, and G. If a song is in Bb, I capo the bass up three frets and play G things. And so on. I don't play bass much, so it comes in handy having a capo.

I really should work on bass more, but acoustic guitar will always be my first love. Till that time - pass the Kyser!

Jaco would blow out all the stops. (as would Paco). Paco de Lucia was famous for his use of a capo on the second fret.

And from there, it's eezy-peezy to work your way up the fingerboard doing the major and minor triads in a given key. It doesn't take very long to get to the point where your fingers know where they're going all by themselves (like they do when you play guitar chords, right?) and those single note lines across the multiple strings might start to feel like, well, arpeggios. Which are slightly-spread-out chords.
And if you want to get all fancy, play the 3rd on the one. Particularly if it is a minor chord.

That's the kind of fancy that gets you sideways looks. Well, me anyway.

Just try not to let any real bass players catch you in the act of experimenting with one.

I have never needed or used a capo on a bass. Not my Precision, nor my Martin acoustic. One of the joys of bass, for me, is the ease with which I can play in any key. Of course, I prefer to finger my notes, I never play open strings.

I'm a real bass player. I'll let you play with a capo any time you want to.

Totally depends on the gig and players. There are ones that would give a sideway look and I know it so I don’t do it. There are others that would be disappointed if I didn’t do things that made them want to look sideways. I typically avoid the first type of gig/players and embrace the latter.

Part of being a sideman is knowing when to lay back and when to lay in. Took me a long time and a lot of gigs to sort that out. But another part of being a musician is having your reach exceed your grasp when it is acceptable. Experience teaches you what defines “acceptable.” Well, that and not getting called back

Just discovered a thread on the forum from days gone by : I guess it was Paul who started it, after all.

Personally, I see this in the same light as the great pick vs. finger conundrum.....

It's just another tool in the toolbox......if it gets the job done for you, go for it!

No judgement here.

Excellanto! Great vid demonstrating the solo bass finesse of a composer/guitarist unchained. *Like the way he repositions his capo to a lower fret on the way out (changing horses in mid-stream).

The reason I sometimes use a capo on guitar is so that I can retain an arrangement that works well around a particular open chord shape.

An obvious example would be something like “here comes the sun”, one of those many songs that play around with an open D chord.

I wouldn’t think that using a capo on a bass would confer the same advantage…but perhaps so.
