I took up guitar when I was 58, now 75. I took weekly lessons in steel string guitar and and weekly lessons in classical for two years, but found, like you, I was drowning in material that I couldn't keep up with. I'm still working on that stuff, and finally all these years later making the kind of progress I had envisioned. I recently had an interest in claw hammer banjo and engaged a teacher, who is pretty renowned, on FaceTime. I don't schedule a lesson with him until I feel I have made progress, in my own terms, on the last lesson. He's awfully exacting, and if I hadn't spent 50 years teaching in higher education I'd question his methods. He's determined to teach me musicality as well as the style. I'm sure the sporadic nature of the lessons is inconvenient for him, but he puts up with it. I explained my experience with the guitar to him when we started. I don't like feeling like an idiot just because I haven't got it yet, I prefer feeling like an idiot because of my natural stupidity.

I do online bi-weekly with my teacher and due to a busy lifestyle find it is a good interval. I play 90% fingerstyle and that is what we focus on. I’ve been with him for six years. We’re a good fit and he offers an online 2-3 hour recital every six months where students like me can submit 1-2 videos. Makes for a fun afternoon and adds some additional goal setting in our experience. You also have an excuse to learn some video and audio recording skills.
