Smile Writing Songs In the Style of The Tallest Man on Earth

I know some other people have essentially asked this question on reddit and other forums, but none of them could point to specific aspects of theory, resources, etc. I was wondering if someone on here was kind enough to help me figure this out.

I've been playing guitar for a few years now, starting with artists like Lead Belly and Charley Patton, then as time went on started learning to play in the style of The Tallest Man on Earth, Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, etc. I'm at the point where I can play most of their songs pretty well with a few hours of learning, but when I go into one of their tunings (BEBEBE, DGDGA#D), or even standard tuning, I just have no idea where to put my fingers or use any theory that can help me write "folk" songs of my own, aside from fingerpicking your standard chords and enhancing them with a little melody. My favorite player of all of these is the TTMOE, I just love the atmosphere the guitar brings to his songs. I'm not quite sure why though, it's probably more on the production end than anything else. I've attached some songs that I can play quite well and love the sound of, but just can't write songs similar to.

Have a look at Jonathan Byrd's YouTube channel,

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCow...GbLFNikEdOESgw

He is running a series of free videos at the moment on song writing. You may find some techniques and inspiration there.

Oh....And welcome to the forum!!!!
