You should be excited Mike. That neck is killer. As is the rest of the guitar. Way to go John!
2 months in finishing? I’m sure you are anxious to get it. I hope your playing it very soon. I’ll be looking forward to the glamour shots. |

Ah thank you NTS. If Fed Ex is to be believed I should have that body back in my hands tomorrow. I'm looking for ward to seeing it.

a little treat from Tony today. Here it is just emerging from its shipping container. Optical grade reflections from the top. (back and sides too)
One of the more harrowing steps in guitar building is next. The finish around the bridge patch must be scored deep enough to disconnect the top finish from the bridge patch finish but not deep enough to score the wood fibers and weaken the top where the bridge is glued. I peg the bridge in place and score around it with a honed xacto knife. Ok those fingers were not prepped for a closeup After scoring the finish the patch is pried off with a chisel and some tugging. The worse thing to go wrong here is if the chisel slips and gouges the finish, or if the score was incomplete and the finish is pulled off the top in an area that will show.

Is there an advantage to using a chisel instead of a router for this step?

A router works and i’ve done that when i did not tape that area beforehand but this area was taped off before the finish was applied and theoretically the tape should just pull up revealing the exact surface of the wood. A router might go a little deeper than necessary removing some extra top wood. It’s hard to judge exactly where that finish/ wood boundary is.

John,
While I love looking at the B/S wood for it’s beautiful colours and grain and the lovely intricacies of the bindings, headplate and rosette, the icing on the cake for me is when I see a top set like this one here. The lovely silking, a nice amount of variation in the colouration, and the evenness across the seam is outstanding IMO. Well done sir !
