Default emerald guitars

i waited too long. i've been watching the emerald guitars in stock now for a few months, wanting an Amicus. there were a handful of them in december and my plan was to buy one this month. so yesterday, i check the stock and only 4 guitars total. i hope it is a just real good business for them and not a covid can't get the materials to us situation. so i guess a custom build is in order to get one. the only problem is there are very few videos on it that i can find. does anyone have one ... i don't know that i would like that short neck because i hate my Taylor 12 fret.

They will be back.

In a recent shipping video (if I remember correctly) Alistair said he will be working on custom orders while the rest of the staff has to remain at home.

I would say that Emeralds are worth the wait, and special ordering allows the customer to really dial in desired features. I'm really enjoying my uber-stealthy X20-12. Begin video at 2:12...

You might want to keep your eyes on the classifieds. There's nothing there now, but once in a while what you want shows up. You might also post a "wanted" ad for your desired instrument. Good luck.

I hear you about the Amicus. I think it sounds wonderful, especially when paired with a grounding instrument like a deep and resonant guitar. I've entertained the idea of an Amicus for settings that I was often involved in pre-COVID. Many times I'd find myself going to jam sessions with several other guitar players, most of which including myself are mediocre. While fun, it is musically lacking and I've always been interested in ways to enhance those situations.

From my years of playing in praise bands I knew something was lacking, so learning about comping and playing complimentary chords with other players often using a capo was certainly beneficial and almost always made the music better. The Amicus would be a fantastic instrument as it automatically shares the same chord shapes as a guitar, and capo'd on the second fret you are automatically in standard. If you hate a short scale neck you would have to adapt though... 18" is not a whole lot of play area

I have an amicus that I use quite a lot with the band I play in.
I have to be honest in that I rarely play it at home, I don't know why, I just tend to pick up my regular guitars.
It's quite easy to play but does require a little more pressure just like any 12 string. It's loud, you'd have no trouble with sound projection at an acoustic jam.
Getting strings is a bit of a pain, you have to order custom sets which can be easy or difficult based on who you try to use. You can steal from 12 string sets but you need 2 of them to string one Amicus.
Someone may have a better solution than I've found.
It's a great instrument that I'll probably hang to to forever , the you need that sound , it's perfect.

There's a reason you can't find an Emerald for sale.

'Nuff said.

I can’t answer to what slimey uses, but Newtone makes a set specifically for the Amicus.

i checked out those newtone strings. they are all the same size....so buying two sets of strings and pairing them up, would that be wrong? I'm just not getting it it seems.

You can either buy the Newtone set, which as you say, contains 6 pairs of strings, each pair being the same size - or you can buy two separate 6-string sets of similar gauges and put them together. Same result.

The Amicus is in an instrument class of it’s own, imo. I absolutely love it’s sound! It’s also solidly built so there’s a lot of tuning flexibility. Mine is tuned down to C and I didn’t have to do any adjustments.

If fretboard real estate is an issue, this might not be the instrument for you. While I find it comfortable to play, I don’t think I venture anywhere past the 12th fret. The notes are so high at that point, I think you’ll be driving dogs nuts anyway.

Darn you people. Now I'm interested in an Amicus. Must resist. Wife would be very unsympathetic.
